Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer McHam.
Hi Jennifer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always loved art, and photography especially. I actually went to school for marketing and design and spent a few years working in the business world before becoming a mom. Once my oldest son was born, I decided to stay home with him for a while. That’s when I picked up my camera again – just to document our everyday life and all those sweet moments!
Before long, friends started asking me to take photos of their kids too, and little by little it just grew. What started as a creative outlet and a way to document my own family slowly turned into a business I truly love. I still feel incredibly grateful I get to do this!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. I think one of the biggest struggles for me – and probably for a lot of creatives – is battling that constant “am I good enough?” feeling. Art is so personal and subjective which can make it really easy to compare yourself to others or question your own work.
Over the years, I’ve had to learn how important it is to stay true to my own style instead of chasing trends or trying to create like someone else. That can be hard in such a visual industry, especially with social media. I’m still learning and growing but the older I get, the easier it is to be confident in creating work that feels genuine to me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in senior portraits which I absolutely LOVE because it’s such an exciting and pivotal season in someone’s life! There’s something really special about getting to document that.
I also work with teens, usually starting around 9th grade, and then I have the privilege of watching them grow over several years. Building those relationships and creating that sense of community is something I’m incredibly proud of.
More than anything, I hope people walk away feeling beautiful, valued, and celebrated – not just because of the photos themselves, but because of the experience they had while creating them!
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
More than anything, I’d say the local photography community has been the biggest blessing. We have a Facebook group where we encourage each other, troubleshoot problems, share location ideas, and celebrate each other. That sense of community and support is really special.
