Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathreena Bunch.
Kathreena, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Kathreena Bunch. I am a 27-year-old Jamaican-American creator born and raised in Staten Island, New York, and a first-generation American on my mother’s side. My journey as an artist started when I was just six years old, copying the world around me with near-perfect precision. Recognizing my gift, my parents constantly invested in me.
Growing up, art became my ultimate form of free expression, whether I was sketching, acting, or dancing.
I was heavily influenced by my aunt Katherine
—a successful actress-who inspired my deep love for theatre. By age four, I was receiving technical training in ballet, jazz, and hip-hop, later joining my high school’s drama department and dance company. This passion led me to Queens College CUNY on a full academic scholarship, where I double-majored in Dance and Studio Art with a concentration in Animation, graduating summa cum laude in 2021.
Despite my academic success, graduating during COVID-19 made the career landscape feel daunting. Refusing to let conventional ideas of success define me, I went back to school to get certified in 3D Modeling and VFX at the Fashion Institute of Technology. I also launched my own venture, KatDragon Illustration Studios, and began writing an odyssey manga/comic book titled When Gods Cry. To make ends meet, I bussed tables and worked as a barista while figuring out how to bridge my skills into a career.
Everything changed the day I randomly posted a video sharing my unfiltered opinions about anime on TikTok. It completely blew up, and I realized I had found my community. When I wanted to dive into cosplay, budget constraints meant saving a tight $20 a month and using pillowcases as makeshift skirts. But as my content began to monetize, I decided to blend my formal degrees with my passion, bringing professional-grade VFX into my cosplays using tools like Blender and Adobe After Effects.
Today, content creation is my full-time job.
Within a single year, my community skyrocketed to over 30,000 cross-platform supporters, with three of my videos hitting 1.5M, 1.8M, and 2M views. That growth has opened doors to amazing partnerships with major brands, and I am even attending DreamCon 2026 as an official featured Creator
—my first convention ever! Today, I also run my own beauty bar, Katdragon Beauty Bar, working out of a private studio. My ultimate goal remains to continue inspiring others to break the mold, chase their creative truths, and always enjoy a good laugh along the way.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. As the first of my siblings to graduate from college, and as a first-generation American on my mother’s side, there is an immense amount of pressure to be the pinnacle of success. Many people in my family are incredibly accomplished, but in very conventional fields—we have teachers, mayors, lawyers, news reporters, and judges. For a long time, it made me feel inferior because my creative mind is wired so differently, meaning my path to success had to look different, too.
Because my career choice is unconventional, it can sometimes seem outright unrealistic to those around me. Breaking into entrepreneurship as a creator focusing on cosplay, digital VFX, and makeup isn’t a traditional trajectory, and it can be hard for a family rooted in traditional professions to see it as a viable business. As a result, I’ve often had to trust the process in isolation, pushing past the outside voices suggesting I quit or find a “real job.” It is mentally taxing to be your own only cheerleader at times, but I hold onto the people who do see the vision—my closest friends and the incredible community supporting me online.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
l am a true multi-hyphenate creative: an author, influencer, 3D modeling/VFX artist, actress, and professional makeup artist (MUA).
I specialize in high-concept, immersive anime cosplay content where I blend cinema-grade visual effects with advanced character transformation.
What I am most proud of is my ability to execute every single layer of my production entirely on my own. I utilize my 8 years of experience as a certified professional makeup artist to completely transform my appearance, and then I lean into my technical training from Queens College and the Fashion Institute of Technology to build entire digital worlds from scratch. Using professional tools like Blender, Adobe After Effects, and Premiere Pro, I create seamless backgrounds and visual effects that allow me to literally step inside the anime universes I love.
What sets me apart from others is this exact intersection of technical skill and raw authenticity. Visually, my grid reflects a unique balance: on one hand, I’m producing high-concept, cinema-grade imagery-like seamlessly editing complex multi-arm VFX shots or building immersive digital backdrops-while right next to it, I’m posting unfiltered commentary on anime tropes, sub vs. dub debates, and step-by-step editing tutorials. In a digital space that can often feel superficial, I pride myself on giving people something real.
What makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is the profound sense of alignment I feel when I am creating with complete freedom, and knowing that my work serves as a safe space for others.
Growing up with an unconventional creative mind, I know how isolating it can feel to look for a community where you truly fit. Being able to build that exact sanctuary for other nerds, blerds, and unconventional thinkers to embrace their true, authentic selves brings me immense joy.
Also, I am deeply happy and grateful for the privilege of creative liberty. I recognize that there are women all over the world who may not have access to the resources, tools, or freedoms that I have to express themselves openly. Because of that, having the independence to build an empire on my own terms-while inspiring other women and creators to realize that they can do the exact same thing—is the most fulfilling feeling in the world.
