Conversations with Michelle Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Brown.

Michelle Brown

Michelle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
On June 22, 2008, founder I witnessed a horrific car accident at an intersection in Plano, Texas. The wreck killed The Hart family, their biological daughters, and their two foster children. I attempted CPR on one of the girls, but heartbreakingly, they both died on the scene. I grew up in Israel and never met foster children or knew anyone who was in foster care. The foster care system in the USA was very foreign to me. After two years of learning about foster care & foster children’s needs, I decided to established Foster Kids Charity.

The mission was simple: to provide the basic needs of foster children while they are in state care.

Since inception, we were able to achieve a lot with modest resources and the support of the community:

The charity established program for food (ongoing), laptop program, a back-to-school drive, Thanksgiving food drive, Christmas parties for foster children, and more. Foster Kids Charity won several awards for outstanding community service and was recognized in the Texas capitol as a great community partner to DFW Metroplex

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a small charity funded by the generosity of the community we serve, it is always difficult to find resources. Our charity is small and modest. We have a small office, small truck, volunteers who help out by picking up donations, and limited funds. In 2008, during the recession, we struggle financially. In 2020- while Covid changed people lives, we jumped in and provided laptops to children that found themselves learning from home. It was fast-paced changes that we had to adapt to on a very limited budget.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a nurse in my profession but been FKC director since inception.

What’s next?
For the future, the plan is to continue to serve foster children, and we trust that with the generosity of those in DFW, we will be able to continue with our programs and service!
