Today we’d like to introduce you to Pat Averhart.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m from Dallas, born and raised. Since being aware of politics and the human condition from a young age I’ve always had an affinity to help others in some shape, form or fashion. My career in the music industry as a guerrilla marketer, booking manager and tour manager allowed me to always be able to help people, hire people, recommend people for gigs/projects etc..The transition into what I consider “The Peoples Work” started initially in 2014 when I was a member of and served on the board of the Dallas County Young Democrats, as well as being a precinct chair for the Dallas County Democrats precinct 1122. I learned how to engage with the political system at the grassroots level. During the Summer of 2020 I was approached by the now co founder of the United Peoples Coalition Coyia Malone about how she could get involved and make a difference. I told her we need to organize.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I believe I’m truly walking in my calling so the struggles to me are little to none. Of course you have the always hanging cloud of funding and getting monetary sources to fund the organizations work but that comes with what we do.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Mutual aid work. Mutual aid work comes in a variety of forms and is meant to create a dual power structure opposite of the capitalist structure we currently live in for the long term socio-economic security of the working class. I like to call the work we do the “community quilt”, because the social safety net and those responsible for it have all too often failed us.
What matters most to you?
Community. Where there are people there is power. When the people have the power and organize there is progress.
