Conversations with Salvador

Today we’d like to introduce you to Salvador.

Hi Salvador, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story in fashion began at a very young age. Ever since I was a child, I naturally stood out in the arts and in anything creative or handmade. I loved creating, drawing, experimenting with shapes and details, and I was always fascinated by silhouettes and dresses. I remember being very young and already noticing how a garment could completely transform a person’s presence, and that’s truly where my passion for fashion and design began.
That creative curiosity later led me to study Textile and Fashion Design Engineering in Mexico, where I developed a strong technical foundation in design, garment construction, and craftsmanship. After that, I spent around four years working in the apparel manufacturing industry in Guanajuato, Mexico, as a quality supervisor on projects for international brands such as Adidas and Puma. That experience allowed me to understand fashion from a much more technical and professional perspective while teaching me the importance of quality, discipline, and attention to detail.

Over time, I felt the need to create something more personal and artistic, which eventually led to the creation of Salvador Medina Atelier. What started as a passion project gradually evolved into a brand focused on couture and custom design. I began creating garments from scratch during my free time, exploring my identity as a designer and developing a style that blends technique, femininity, and emotion.

Today, I’m based in Dallas, a city that has allowed me to grow tremendously both personally and professionally. I’ve had the opportunity to work with incredible clients, participate in fashion weeks, and continue building a brand that truly represents who I am creatively. For me, fashion has always been much more than clothing; it is a form of art and a way to make people feel confident, empowered, and special through what they wear.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
t definitely has not been an easy journey, but I truly believe every challenge has played an important role in shaping me both personally and professionally. Like many creatives, I’ve experienced moments of uncertainty, especially when starting my own brand. Transitioning from working within the industry to building something entirely my own required taking risks, constantly learning, and believing in my vision even during moments when everything felt unclear.
One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to balance the artistic side with the business side. As a designer, your natural instinct is to focus on creating, but you also have to learn about management, client relations, production, marketing, and how to grow a brand sustainably. There have been moments of exhaustion, long nights working, financial pressure, and situations where I had to figure everything out almost entirely on my own. But honestly, those experiences also helped me develop resilience and character.

Another very important part of my journey has been the language barrier. Spanish is my first language, and since moving to the United States — especially to Dallas — adapting to English has been a major part of my personal and professional growth. It has been a continuous process of learning the language, understanding how to communicate more confidently, and being able to connect with clients and navigate the industry more effectively. At first, it could feel intimidating, especially working in such a competitive environment and with clients from different backgrounds, but I believe that experience has helped me grow tremendously both as a person and as a business owner.

Another important challenge has been building my path within such a competitive industry while still developing my own identity. I’ve always wanted to create pieces that feel authentic and emotional, and sometimes that means going against expectations or taking longer to truly find your creative voice. However, I believe those challenges are exactly what make every accomplishment feel much more meaningful.

It has also been a very personal journey of self-growth and confidence. Learning to trust my work, share my vision openly, and understand that growth takes time has been a major part of the process. Today, I can say that although the journey hasn’t been easy, I’m incredibly grateful for every stage because each one has helped shape me into the designer and person I am today.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently, I focus on designing and creating couture and custom-made pieces through Salvador Medina Atelier. My work is primarily centered around evening gowns, special occasion pieces, and made-to-measure designs, where I’m able to combine creativity, technical skill, and attention to detail to create something truly unique for each client.
I specialize heavily in garment construction and finishing techniques. Because of my technical background and experience in manufacturing, I’ve always been very detail-oriented when it comes to quality and structure. I want my designs not only to look beautiful visually, but also to be thoughtfully constructed and make the person wearing them feel confident and special. I also deeply enjoy the creative process behind every piece from developing the initial concept and silhouette to selecting fabrics, textures, and details that help tell a story.
I believe I’m known for creating designs that feel feminine, elegant, and emotional while still having a strong sense of personality. Even though much of my work focuses on womenswear, something I truly love is that many men are also drawn to and inspired by my work and aesthetic. I think that happens because I approach fashion as a form of art and expression beyond gender. People connect with the silhouettes, the drama, the details, and the emotion behind each piece, whether or not they would personally wear the design.
I also value the connection with my clients tremendously; for me, the experience is just as important as the final garment. I love understanding who the person is, how they want to feel, and what story they want to tell through the piece.
What I’m most proud of is building my path almost entirely from the ground up while staying true to my creative identity. As an immigrant and someone whose first language is Spanish, adapting to a new city and building a brand in a completely different environment has been a huge challenge, but also incredibly rewarding. Seeing people connect with my work and trust me with important moments in their lives is something I never take for granted.
I think what distinguishes me the most is the balance between artistry and technical knowledge. I love creativity and storytelling through fashion, but I also have a strong understanding of garment construction, craftsmanship, and quality from my experience in the industry. That combination allows me to approach design from a very complete perspective. Most importantly, I put a lot of heart into every piece I create for me, fashion should always feel emotional, authentic, and personal.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
The most important advice I could give is to not be afraid to start. Many times, we wait until we feel completely ready or until everything feels perfect before taking the first step, but a lot of the learning actually happens throughout the process. I believe it’s very important to trust your vision, allow yourself to experiment, and understand that growth takes time.
Another piece of advice I think is incredibly valuable is to not focus only on the creative side. Having a brand also means learning about business, finances, administration, and communication. Sometimes, when we begin a creative career, we think talent and design alone will be enough, but in reality, there is so much work happening behind the scenes to build something strong and sustainable long term. Understanding how to manage a brand is just as important as developing creativity.
I would also say it’s essential to avoid constantly comparing yourself to other brands or designers. Every person has a completely different vision, journey, and identity. I believe that when you truly connect with who you are and what you want to express, your work begins to stand out in a much more authentic way.
And above all, always strive for excellence and quality in everything you create. In this industry, details make an enormous difference. Dedication, attention to finishing techniques, and the commitment to offering the highest level of work are things people truly notice. I believe that constant pursuit of quality is ultimately what attracts clients who genuinely value design, craftsmanship, and the experience behind every piece.
