Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheila Stephens.
Sheila, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Photography wasn’t originally the career path I expected to take. For years, I worked in the beauty industry, and creativity had always been a huge part of my life. But in 2016, my son introduced me to photography, and something about it instantly clicked for me. What started as curiosity quickly turned into a passion for storytelling through images. I picked up my first camera that year, and over time photography became more than just a creative outlet — it became the career I was meant to pursue.
Like many artists, my journey has evolved over the years. When I first started professionally, I focused primarily on weddings. I loved documenting emotional moments and celebrating people in such meaningful seasons of life. As my style and confidence grew, I transitioned into boudoir photography, where I discovered how powerful photography could be in helping people feel confident, seen, and beautiful in their own skin.
Today, my niche has evolved once again into what feels most aligned with who I am creatively. I now specialize in engagements, elopements, and civil weddings, working closely with couples who are choosing a more intimate and intentional wedding experience. There’s something incredibly special about smaller weddings and elopements — the focus shifts fully onto the connection, the emotions, and the story between two people. Those quieter, authentic moments are what inspire me most.
While my primary focus now is intimate weddings and elopements, I still photograph larger weddings, boudoir sessions, and senior portraits as well. Every chapter of my career has shaped my approach and helped me refine not only my style, but also the experience I want my clients to have in front of my camera.
At the heart of it all, photography has become about connection for me — creating images that feel honest, emotional, and true to the people in them.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges in my photography journey has been learning when to fully trust myself and take the leap into this career wholeheartedly. Before photography, I spent years in the cosmetology industry, which was such a big part of my life and identity. Walking away from that wasn’t easy. There was a period where I was trying to balance both careers at once, and eventually I realized I couldn’t truly be fully present for my photography clients while still splitting my time and energy between two professions. Choosing to step fully into photography was both exciting and terrifying, but it was also one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve made for myself and my business.
Another struggle has been deciding what to specialize in. The truth is, I simply love creating beautiful images. I enjoy the emotion of weddings, the intimacy of boudoir, the excitement of engagements, and the personality that comes through in senior portraits. For a long time, I wanted to do it all because I genuinely love every aspect of photography. But over time, I’ve learned that growth often requires focus. In order to truly master something and build a strong brand, you have to choose a lane to drive in, so to speak. That realization helped me narrow my focus toward engagement sessions, elopements, and intimate weddings — the work that feels most aligned with me creatively right now.
I’ve also had to learn the importance of balance. As a creative business owner, it’s easy to fall into the habit of constantly working — answering emails late at night, editing nonstop, planning the next project, or always feeling like there’s more to do. One of my ongoing challenges has been learning when to step away and allow myself time to rest and simply enjoy life outside of work. I care deeply about my clients and my business, but I’m also learning that creativity thrives when there’s space to breathe and recharge.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Over the years, I’ve learned that photography isn’t just about the images themselves — it’s about the experience, the connection, and the moments people will carry with them for the rest of their lives. As my career evolved, so did my understanding of the kind of work that truly fulfills me creatively and personally. That’s ultimately what led me toward specializing in engagements, elopements, and intimate weddings.
When I first started photography, I photographed larger traditional weddings, and I still do from time to time. But as I’ve gotten older and gained more experience, I’ve realized I’m naturally drawn to smaller, more intentional celebrations. Being 50 years old now, I’ve become more mindful of the physical demands that come with photographing large, all-day events. Wedding days are beautiful, but they can also be incredibly long and physically exhausting. I reached a point where I wanted to build a business that not only aligned with my creativity, but also supported balance and longevity for myself as an artist.
What I discovered is that smaller weddings and elopements allow me to create in a much deeper way. There’s often less chaos, less pressure, and more room for genuine connection. I’m able to slow down, truly get to know my couples, and focus on the emotions and quiet moments that make their story unique. Those intimate settings create space for authenticity, and I believe that authenticity is what makes photographs timeless and meaningful.
I love that with elopements and intimate weddings, the focus is less about production and more about the relationship itself. The couples I work with are usually choosing experiences that feel personal and intentional, and that resonates deeply with me. It allows me to document their day in a way that feels honest, emotional, and connected rather than rushed.
At this stage in my life and career, I’ve realized that success for me isn’t about photographing the biggest events possible — it’s about creating meaningful experiences, building genuine relationships with my clients, and delivering images that truly feel like them. That’s what drew me to this niche, and honestly, it feels exactly where I’m supposed to be.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe the quality that has contributed most to my success is my ability to genuinely connect with people. Photography is so much more than knowing camera settings or posing someone correctly — it’s about making people feel comfortable, seen, and understood. Whether I’m photographing a couple on their wedding day, an intimate boudoir session, or a senior portrait, I want my clients to feel like they can fully be themselves in front of my camera.
I’ve learned that when people feel safe and relaxed, the most meaningful and beautiful moments happen naturally. That connection allows me to capture emotion in a way that feels authentic instead of forced, and I think that’s what people connect with most in my work.
Another characteristic that has helped me succeed is adaptability. My career has evolved several times over the years, and I’ve had to be willing to grow, pivot, and trust myself through each stage of that process. From transitioning out of the cosmetology industry to refining my photography niche multiple times, I’ve learned that growth often comes from being open to change instead of resisting it.
I also think passion plays a huge role in my success. I genuinely love creating beautiful images and telling people’s stories. Even after years of doing this, I still get excited about documenting real emotions and meaningful moments. That passion keeps me motivated to continue learning, improving, and giving my clients an experience that feels personal and memorable.
