Conversations with Tai Moore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tai Moore

Hi Tai, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From the moment I was born, the fashion world has been an inseparable part of my life. My earliest memories are filled with the rhythmic hum of a sewing machine, a gift from my mother, who saw in me a budding designer. This simple yet profound gift became my gateway to a universe where fabric, thread, and imagination wove together to create wearable art. I spent countless hours tinkering with that machine, learning its quirks and capabilities, and sewing little things that soon evolved into more ambitious projects.

As I grew, so did my passion for fashion. I began experimenting with t-shirts, using scrap leather and other materials to transform plain garments into unique pieces that spoke to my emerging style. This phase of my life was not just about clothing; it was about discovering the power of creativity and the joy of bringing ideas to life through design.

My journey took a more formal turn when I enrolled in fashion design school. Immersed in an environment teeming with creativity and innovation, I honed my skills and broadened my understanding of the fashion industry. However, like many paths, mine was not without its doubts and detours. After a brief stint at school, I found myself questioning whether my fashion dreams were viable, whether they could withstand the harsh realities of the industry.

It was during this period of uncertainty that fate intervened. One day, while driving down the tollway in Dallas, a sign caught my eye: Lombardo Custom Apparel. Intrigued, I decided to step inside, not realizing that this seemingly spontaneous decision would alter the course of my life. The world of Lombardo Custom Apparel opened up to me, offering not just a job, but a mentorship under the brilliant leadership of Jay Lombardo. Here, I absorbed invaluable lessons, refined my craft, and understood the intricacies of the fashion business from the inside out.

Years of hard work and dedication under the guidance of industry veterans prepared me for my next leap. When the time was right, I took a bold step forward, leveraging my accumulated knowledge and network of connections to launch my own brand, Adam Lusso. The name, loosely translating to “The first luxury man,” embodies my vision of merging timeless elegance with modern luxury, creating pieces that resonate with the discerning tastes of today’s fashion connoisseur.

Today, Adam Lusso stands as a testament to my journey—a blend of childhood dreams, relentless pursuit, and the transformative power of mentorship. It’s a celebration of luxury, style, and the indomitable spirit of a designer who dared to dream and had the courage to make those dreams a reality.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a custom clothier business has been a journey filled with its share of challenges. One of the initial hurdles was establishing reliable connections with mills and manufacturers. Ensuring consistent quality and timely deliveries required building strong relationships and navigating the complexities of international trade.

Finding new clientele was another significant challenge. Without the visibility of a brick-and-mortar store, I had to be innovative in my approach, leveraging digital marketing and networking to reach potential customers. The lack of a physical storefront meant missing out on spontaneous walk-ins, which necessitated a strong online presence and exceptional word-of-mouth referrals.

Additionally, adjusting to the time differences with many overseas vendors was a constant struggle. Coordinating with suppliers in different time zones required meticulous planning and flexibility, often leading to late-night or early-morning communications to ensure everything ran smoothly.

These challenges, while daunting, ultimately strengthened my resolve and honed my ability to adapt and innovate within the industry.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in creating bespoke men’s garments, from dress shirts and overcoats to joggers and polos, with a particular focus on suiting. Crafting the perfect suit has always been my passion, and I take great pride in tailoring each piece to reflect the unique style and personality of my clients.

What I’m most proud of is maintaining my relevance and presence in the fashion industry, especially given the dramatic shifts brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The traditional suiting clientele has largely transitioned to a more casual style, both in their professional and personal lives. Men who once donned sport jackets for all occasions are now frequently seen in golf polos. Despite these changes, I’ve managed to adapt and continue serving my clients’ evolving needs.

What truly sets me apart is the personal relationships I cultivate with my clients. These connections go beyond mere transactions. I invest in understanding their individual preferences and lifestyles, which ensures I am their go-to for any clothing needs. This approach has fostered a loyal clientele who trust me with their wardrobe decisions and frequently refer others to my services.

I go above and beyond to meet my clients’ needs. Whether it’s hand-delivering a suit to an NFL player at 6 a.m. on game day or sourcing a specific bow tie left behind in Texas and arranging for its delivery to a resort in Mexico City just in time for a wedding, I am committed to providing exceptional service. This dedication to exceeding expectations and forming genuine connections is what sets me apart in the custom clothier industry.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The quality I consider most crucial to my success is perseverance. In the fashion industry, and many others, a single client or situation can dramatically elevate your business. Often, success hinges on the ability to seize that leap of faith at the right moment. However, if you’ve given up or let self-doubt take over, you’ll likely miss those pivotal opportunities.

Perseverance means pushing through even when things get tough. I still have days when I need to remind myself, “We’ll get through this challenge like the others.” Overcoming these obstacles, no matter how daunting, is always worth it in the end. It’s this unwavering determination that has enabled me to navigate the ups and downs of the industry and continue to thrive.
