Conversations with Torrey Fox

Today we’d like to introduce you to Torrey Fox.

Hi Torrey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My love for photography began in an unlikely but fitting place: my parents’ garden. In high school, I signed up for a photography class largely because my older sister had taken it before me—I wanted to try everything she did. For one assignment, I photographed my parents’ English rose garden at golden hour, and something clicked. I fell in love with the process of creating images through light and composition, and with the magic of watching a photograph emerge in the darkroom. What started as curiosity quickly became a passion, and by the time I got to college, it didn’t take long to realize photography wasn’t just something I enjoyed—it was what I wanted to dedicate my life to.
Throughout my education, many of my professors encouraged me to pursue a more conceptual or edgy artistic style. While I appreciated those influences, I always found myself drawn back to something simpler: beautiful light, genuine emotion, and timeless subjects. The same things that captivated me while photographing a rose glowing in the evening sun continue to inspire my work today. That love naturally evolved into wedding and family photography, where I have the privilege of documenting life’s most meaningful moments with honesty and beauty.
Today, i’ve been in business for over 12 years, and I am fortunate to work alongside my husband. Together, we’ve built a business centered on connection, storytelling, and creating images that families will treasure for generations. Being born, raised, and educated in Marin County has also shaped my perspective as a photographer. Surrounded by some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world, I developed a deep appreciation for natural beauty and the way light transforms a scene. Whether I’m photographing a wedding, a growing family, or a quiet moment between loved ones, my goal is always the same: to create timeless photographs that celebrate beauty, connection, and the stories that matter most.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest obstacle which I genuinely believe to be an artistic asset is that I work with real people in real moments. I have learned that some of the most beautiful images come from circumstances that aren’t perfect. Children have meltdowns, weather changes unexpectedly, timelines run late, and life rarely unfolds exactly as planned. One of the skills I’ve developed over the past 12 years is finding beauty in those imperfect moments and helping people relax enough to simply be themselves. Often, the photographs my clients cherish most are the ones they never planned for—the genuine laughs, quiet embraces, and fleeting moments of connection that tell the real story of their lives.

Another challenge is staying true to my artistic vision in an industry that is constantly changing. Photography trends come and go, and social media can create pressure to follow whatever style is popular at the moment. I’ve learned that the most meaningful work comes from remaining authentic to what first inspired me: beautiful light, genuine connection, and timeless imagery. Rather than chasing trends, I focus on creating photographs that will still feel beautiful and relevant decades from now. That commitment has helped me build a business that reflects who I am as an artist and serves my clients in a way that feels genuine and lasting.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My aesthetic is soft, natural, and timeless, using warm tones, golden light, and the iconic beauty of the Bay Area as a backdrop for my clients’ stories. While I love creating beautiful portraits, my favorite moments are often the unexpected in-between moments—the quiet glance between a couple, a child reaching for a parent’s hand, or a spontaneous burst of laughter. Those are the moments that feel the most honest and meaningful to me.

I approach every session with the understanding that no two families, couples, or stories are the same. Rather than relying on a formula, I see each session as a unique puzzle that comes together piece by piece. I guide and pose my clients, but I also pay close attention to how they naturally interact, connect, and move together. Throughout a session, I’m constantly making small adjustments while leaning into the genuine dynamics that make each relationship special. My goal is for every image to feel authentic and full of life. I never want my photographs to feel overly posed—I want them to feel like a true reflection of the people and relationships they capture.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
The book I always come back to year after year as a great new years re-set is “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. One of my favorite podcasts is “creative peptalk” by author and illustrator Andy J. Pizza, I love his take on the creative process and his little bits wisdom on creating. I always feel so fired up after I listen to his episodes. It has become a new habit of mine to listen to an episode of his podcast before going into a session.
