Daily Inspiration: Meet Alexa Pouzar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Pouzar.

Alexa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Dallas, TX. Developing a love for photography as a child, this fascination grew into questioning how a medium that captures reality can be used to explore time. The ability to capture reality before it changes and have that moment immortalized as it occurred, while also being able to manipulate it into something less tangible, is something I find especially unique to photography. I currently explore this through layering multiple photos into a single scene and look at memory through repeated colors, pattern, and texture within my current state. In 2024, I graduated the University of North Texas with a BFA in photography and minor in art history.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been an interesting road. Before I entered college, I had only ever seen photography as a passion hobby – not something I could ever pursue professionally. Once in school and actively learning about new artists, meeting new people, and just learning more about the medium as a whole, I began to reignite that original passion. While in school, I struggled with a lot of self-doubt and depression. Post-graduation, I’ve found a better footing and have been working on making changes.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My specialty is abstract digital photography, particularly through the layering of photos. Before working on my degree and teaching myself how to take photos through trial and error, I focused on the raw image and being able to take a good photo. While in school, I took the Photoshop course offered by UNT having never used any Adobe product before. Everything we did was new to me. When we began layering to create new detailed photos, I was struggling to keep up with the assignments and information. Somewhere along the way, in my bewilderment at what I was supposed to do, I created a new image with 23 photos … and a lightbulb begin to go off in my head. I have since turned that accidental creation into a series using many layers of images to explore the passage and changes of time. It was also a eureka moment for me because I had begun to lose interest in photography because it was hard for me to be happy with just a singular image. With this new process I discovered, I was able to use multiple images to create a stronger final “singular” photo. This discovery is my proudest moment because it set me off in this new direction and taught me a lot about my photography – but also more general, art – interests.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
What you make can find you your community. It won’t be accepted everywhere, but it will open up new connections and spaces to explore. As you grow, so does your world. Time isn’t stagnant, there will always be a low following a high and vice versa. So long as the creation is genuine, what follows will be too.
