Today we’d like to introduce you to Amirah Mangum.
Hi Amirah , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Amirah Mangum, I’m originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota. My journey of being an entrepreneur began when I was in college at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). I started off doing henna in my dorm room in the year of 2017. I marketed myself at every school event I could to put myself out there because as we all know college students don’t have a lot of any money. Plus doing henna for me was fun and exhilarating. I always loved teaching myself new things and drawing was always fun because you can learn so many things throughout the process. Into my 2 years of doing henna and building up a reputable clientele on campus I began learning the art of tattooing. It has been filled with 7 years of blood, sweat and tears… literally, but I wouldn’t trade my journey for the world and I would tell anyone pursuing entrepreneurship to do it in full force. Go through all the trials and tribulations, good or bad. In the end it’ll make you a better, well rounded person.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Servicing people has its ups and downs more so ups then downs. You build life long relationships that’ll make you remember why you started. On the other hand some of the struggles we’re working on maintaining composure when people speak to you certain ways, keeping it business like. Also it can be hard to stay motivated in times where you don’t feel like moving. The journey is challenging but the reward in the end is more fulfilling than anything you will go through or anyone trying to bring you down.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a tattoo artist, henna artist and a therapist for my clients. I would say I am a well rounded artist, specializing in gray wash, fine line and temporary tattoos. I’m known for my storytelling with tattoos, especially when my clients tell me their background, what they love and what part of their journey they’re in with life. It’s easier for me to connect with clients that way. I’m proud of all the hard work I’ve done to make my business the success it is this far. I’d say what sets me apart from others is that I want to connect with my clients on a more spiritual level, I tend to not work well with people if I cannot connect but the ones I do connect with I build lifelong relationships with.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
If you don’t take any risks, you won’t gain any rewards. Being fearful holds people back from a lot of life level ups that we as people need to go through in order to be the best version of ourselves we should be. I’ve taken many risks or as I’d call them, stepping out on faith. The most recent is my move here to Dallas Texas. I was scared out of my mind, leaving my stable income and the comfort that I built to embark on a new journey. But I can say I’m here and the reward was definitely worth the risk. Now I’m here married, one child and a home and a career that has advanced greater than I could ever seen.
