Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Roberts.
Hi Andy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story begins at 13 years old when my dad would let me use his Sony Mavica camera. If anyone remembers that thing, it had a huge screen and you shot on a floppy disc, haha!
I fell in love with taking photos of the day to day and it just felt amazing to be able to freeze a moment in time. My best friend in high school spent a lot of time at his grandparents house and we would spend a lot of time over there together as well. His grandfather was retired from the military and was also a photographer while in his time there. He had, honestly, millions of photos from over the years. We’d always talk shop and he’d even let me borrow a camera or two from time to time.
As I got older, I started taking my friends senior photos and while I was terrible at it, I always found so much joy in making people laugh and just hanging out with and getting to know peoples stories. I eventually fell into weddings where I fell in love with peoples love stories and making their dreams come to life. I will always give thanks to the people that trusted me in the beginning of my history with some of the biggest days of their lives!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With anything that’s worth doing, there have definitely been bumps in the road. More in the beginning as I tried to figure out my “style” as a photographer and what I really wanted my final product to look like. I never took a course or anything to learn because honestly, that wasn’t really available when I got started. Anyone that was already an established photographer kept all their secrets close to the belt. So it was nearly impossible to learn from others.
Most of my struggles were self inflicted. As I didn’t know about contracts and making sure I was covered in case of a loss or sickness. I quickly learned but man it wasn’t always easy lol.
Thankfully the amount of content available for new and aspiring photographers is very wide. Youtube is still a lifesaver for me sometimes!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Hi! My name is Andy Roberts! I’m a Wedding Photographer based out of Shreveport, Louisiana. I’m known for my more candid style of wedding photography, making people laugh and having a calm and fun demeanor on wedding days. I’m a yes man and will do my best to make sure my brides and grooms get every moment they want and then some.
You’d think what I’m most proud of something within my work but what I’m really proud of is the fact that I can provide for my wife and 4 children with this career. It’s something I never thought I’d be able to do.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t really believe in luck. But what I do believe in is the provision of God. He has blessed me with this business and I’ve been able to give back to my community either by donation or by doing family photos and capturing things for people that never could have. I don’t believe photos are just a luxury but a necessity in some ways. How do we remember our loved ones who have passed on without something to see and remember them by?
