Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Colombo.
Hi Danielle, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Galveston surfing and going to the beach. After graduating Texas State with a B.A. in Art History, I became an art teacher in the central Texas area and did that for 6 years and decided to open a zero waste and refill store. I loved the idea of reducing plastic waste and offering a store for people to refill their products. I have now had Sunset Refillery and Market going on 4 years and am always so grateful for the number of people who support and especially are dedicated to reducing plastic in the environment. Over the years we have hosted workshops, events and artists at our downtown shop. We have a full range of refillable options from laundry detergent to facial serum, and concentrated soap bar options as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggles include finding affordable rent in the commercial zones that have shopper foot traffic, convincing people to go back to conservation over convenience, and marketing my business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As mentioned, I am a former art teacher. I have been a business owner for 4 years and also do bookkeeping on the side. During my time as a refill store owner I have also taken an interest in herbal wellness through skincare.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is humans finding a balance with nature.
