Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Marta Torres
Hi Dr. Marta, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been in Dallas for nine years, but my journey started in Puerto Rico, where I earned both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. I identify as an Afro-Latina Mexirican and am the daughter of two veterans. As the oldest of three siblings, I grew up in a household where my parents instilled in me a love for pursuing all of my interests, which has shaped the multifaceted career I have today.
Early on, I developed a passion for career coaching, mentoring, and creating transformative learning experiences. While in college, I started helping peers with career mapping, resume building, and interview preparation, which naturally evolved into my work in higher education, museum education, and theater. As an actor and arts administrator, I’ve worked on projects that center Latinx and multi-racial storytelling, ensuring diverse narratives are represented on stage and in arts programming. I later pursued my Doctorate in Learning and Organizational Change from Baylor University, expanding my expertise in student success programs, leadership initiatives, and retention strategies.
Alongside education and the arts, I followed another passion—esthetics and wellness. I initially went to BMG University to earn my esthetics license, but during that journey, I was nurtured into becoming an instructor, allowing me to pair my love for education with esthetics and wellness. Now, I am a Master Esthetics Instructor at BMG University in Garland and the owner of Academe Esthetics, an exclusively mobile spa service, which I run from West Dallas. My expertise lies in customizing skincare for my clients, tailoring treatments to meet their unique skin needs and goals.
In addition to esthetics, I offer professional development services, including career coaching, career mapping, resume building, and interview preparation. Whether I’m mentoring early-career professionals, coaching artists, teaching esthetics students, performing, or providing personalized skincare services, my work is all about uplifting, educating, and empowering others.
It’s been a journey of growth, learning, and weaving together multiple passions into a career that’s both fulfilling and impactful.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped me into who I am today.
One of the biggest struggles has been navigating multiple industries while staying true to my passions. and being away from home and family. It’s just me and my brother in DFW, although I was born in Texas, I grew up in Puerto Rico. Since I’ve moved to Dallas, I’ve worked across education, non-profit, arts administration, theater, esthetics, and career development, which has meant constantly learning, adapting, and proving myself in different spaces. While some people specialize in one field, my path has been about weaving together multiple interests, and that hasn’t always been easy.
Another challenge has been balancing stability with creativity and entrepreneurship. Working in higher education and arts programming to building my own business, Academe Esthetics, as a mobile spa service required a shift in mindset. Running a business while teaching, mentoring, and performing means juggling multiple responsibilities, and that takes grit, resilience, and a lot of self-motivation.
There were also personal and financial hurdles, like working full-time while earning my Doctorate in Learning and Organizational Change. Pursuing higher education as a first-generation doctorate holder came with its own pressures and challenges, especially while managing work and creative projects.
Despite the struggles, I’ve always found ways to build community, seek mentorship, and keep pushing forward. I’m lucky and blessed to have the support system – my friends and family_ to support me in all my endeavors. My parents, both veterans, instilled in me a love for pursuing all of my interests, and that mindset has helped me embrace every twist and turn. Through it all, I’ve remained committed to uplifting others—whether it’s through education, esthetics, professional development, or the arts.
Every challenge has taught me something valuable, and while the road hasn’t been smooth, it’s been deeply fulfilling.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What I’m Most Proud Of
I’m proud of my ability to build and sustain a career that honors all my passions. Instead of choosing just one path, I’ve found a way to merge education, arts, and wellness into meaningful work. I’m especially proud of:
My work is deeply rooted in wellness, professional development, and empowerment, blending esthetics and career coaching to help individuals feel confident—both in their skin and in their careers.
Academe Esthetics – Personalized Skincare & Wellness
I am the owner of Academe Esthetics, an exclusively mobile spa service based in West Dallas, where I specialize in customizing skincare treatments to meet each client’s unique needs. I believe skincare is more than just aesthetics—it’s about self-care, confidence, and overall well-being.
I am known for soothing the skin and bringing ease to any concerns, ensuring that each facial is tailored to address specific skin goals. My background in education allows me to teach clients about their skin, providing them with the tools and knowledge to maintain a healthy glow beyond their treatments. Come see me for a facial and experience customized, results-driven skincare!
Professional Development Services – Career Coaching & Mentorship
Beyond esthetics, I offer professional development services to help individuals take control of their careers. I have been developing my expertise in career coaching, career mapping, resume building, and interview preparation since college, and I now apply these skills to support fellow artists, early-career professionals, and aspiring entrepreneurs.
I understand that navigating a career—especially in creative or service industries—can be overwhelming, so I provide personalized coaching to help people map out their professional journeys, refine their resumes, and prepare for interviews with confidence. My goal is to ensure that those I work with feel empowered to step into new opportunities with clarity and readiness.
What Sets Me Apart
What makes my work unique is my ability to bridge self-care and career growth. I don’t just offer facials—I provide a holistic experience that focuses on confidence, knowledge, and empowerment. Whether through skincare treatments or career coaching, I am dedicated to helping people look and feel their best—inside and out.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One surprising thing that many people don’t know about me is that my journey into esthetics started as a personal passion, not a career plan. When I first enrolled at BMG University, I simply wanted to learn how to do lash extensions – but it’s my least favorite thing!-. But along the way, I was nurtured into becoming an instructor, and that completely shifted my perspective—I realized I could blend my love for education with esthetics and wellness. Now, I not only provide customized skincare services through Academe Esthetics, but I also train and mentor aspiring estheticians as a Master Esthetics Instructor.
Another thing people might not know is that I’ve been helping people with career development since college. While most people recognize me for my work in esthetics and arts administration, I’ve spent years coaching others in career mapping, resume building, and interview preparation—especially fellow artists and early-career professionals. My ability to bridge self-care and career confidence is what truly sets my work apart. Also and this migh not be a secret or surprising if you spend enough time with me , but I love to sing.
