Daily Inspiration: Meet Elijah Caver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elijah Caver.

Hi Elijah , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Elijah Caver and I am a versatile musician from Fort Worth, TX. I was born and raised in a musical family. I hold a bachelor’s degree in music education with a classical percussion focus from Texas Christian University and a master’s degree in jazz studies with a focus in jazz drum set from the University of North Texas. I have performed with renowned musicians, including Billy Childs, Jeff Lederer, Ben Allison, Shelley Carrol, Quamon Fowler, Keith Pringle and others. I regularly perform with my own band and collaborate with other artists and groups. Along with performing, I teach drum set and percussion lessons/clinics throughout school districts in the DFW area and at Guitar Center’s Hulen location in Fort Worth. I remain active on all of my social media outlets posting drumming content weekly.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The path has certainly presented its challenges, however it has concurrently been fulfilling, successfully overcoming the growing pains that were crucial to reaching the success I strive for as both an artist and educator.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My career is centered on music and education as a full-time musician, artist, and educator, with a focus on drums in gospel, jazz, Latin-jazz, and fusion. My master’s studies in jazz at UNT significantly refined my craft. Having grown up in a church setting, I had to adjust my drumming approach and perspective, which has now significantly impacted my musical development for the better. I would say the incorporation of jazz and Latin-jazz elements, specifically Afro-Cuban rhythms, distinguishes my drumming and contributes to my versatility.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love about Fort Worth is that it is literally not Dallas lol. I have always liked how Fort Worth can feel like a big city and a small city at the same time…not too much of either, but the right balance of both. What I like the least of it is that it is slowly becoming more crowded than it ever has been in its history.
