Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika (TwistedwitE) Kidd.
Hi Erika (TwistedwitE), it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began my loc journey during a time in my life that was both transformative and deeply challenging. I was first introduced to the craft by my ex-husband, who taught me the foundation and sparked my interest. After we separated, what once felt like a painful ending became the beginning of something powerful—I took that skill and turned it into my livelihood. Now, ten years into the loc game, I can see how that season, though one of the most depressing in my life, ultimately shaped me into the person I was becoming. It opened my eyes to a whole new world filled with creativity, connection, and opportunity, and gave me a sense of purpose I never expected. What started as a lesson became a passion, and that passion grew into a path that continues to elevate me today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Was it a smooth road? Not at all. The journey came with its fair share of challenges, especially in the beginning. Building a solid clientele wasn’t easy, and I quickly realized that talent alone wasn’t enough—you have to know how to market yourself too. Staying consistent and relevant on social media was another struggle, especially while trying to balance everything else. I had to learn that word of mouth, while valuable, isn’t always enough to grow a business in today’s world. Over time, I pushed myself to understand how to use social media as a tool to leverage and expand my brand. At the same time, I continued investing in my education—learning more about loc care, refining my techniques, and exploring new methods and styles. Every challenge taught me something, and each lesson helped me grow stronger in my craft and more confident in my business. Now with over 800 people signed on to my website from across the world, means so much to me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in all things locs, from traditional dreadlocks to detailed loc maintenance, crocheting, and loc repairs. Over the years, I’ve developed a deep understanding of loc care and take pride in providing services that not only enhance the look but also protect the health of my clients’ hair. What truly sets me apart is my signature approach—“E Twist, No Retwist.” It’s more than just a slogan; it represents my unique method and the experience I bring to every client. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come in mastering my craft and building something that reflects both my skill and my journey. My work speaks for itself, and the trust my clients place in me is what continues to motivate me to grow, evolve, and stand out in the loc community.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk-taking, to me, is about betting on yourself even when the outcome is uncertain. I wouldn’t say the journey has been easy, but I do believe in stepping out on faith and trusting my craft. One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was recently relocating to Houston, Texas, to expand my business and see if I could successfully manage and build clientele in two different cities. I came here with no family, no clients, and no friends—just me and my son, driven by determination and purpose.
Six months in, and the results have truly blown my mind. I’ve already won my first hair battle competition here, been selected for radio commercials, and built a steady, growing clientele with consistent daily work. That experience showed me that risk can lead to incredible growth when you stay dedicated and विश्वास in yourself. For me, consistency is key—showing up every day, putting in the work, and trusting that what’s meant for you will align when you’re willing to take that leap.
