Today, we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Gorman.
Hi Katrina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I was often in my world from an early age, where my imagination flourished. In school, I enjoyed writing short stories with pictures, and later on, I started to draw continuously.
When I watched my mom sew, I was so fascinated with the sounds of the sewing machines and the beautiful clothes she made for us that she taught me how to sew at an early age.
My images and thoughts came out in a different direction than quilting or fashion, but I’m fabric art.
Over time, my style evolved from experimenting with fabrics to creating new ways to create art.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been such an evolution the whole time.
Creating art has always been my journey’s most natural and easy part. It’s been something I can count on to convey what I’ve wanted to say in a visual form. Everything else in my journey has been a work in progress.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a multi-medium artist who specializes in textile art.
When I’m not working on textiles to create one-of-a-kind originals, I create in pencils, charcoal, acrylic, and oils or mixed media. The most important part of my art is how the story will come out, and then I decide which medium to use to tell it.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I would say people might not know that when I create, the flow of it takes me to another world where I see in mind what I’d like to create before I get started bringing it to fruition.
The colors, patterns, and story have to be finished in my mind. Then, when I create, it’s already finished.
