Daily Inspiration: Meet Kim Bailey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Bailey.

Hi Kim, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into interior design has been anything but traditional. Like many women, I spent a season of life focused on raising my family and was a stay-at-home mom for 15 years. During that time, I discovered a passion for creating beautiful, functional spaces and became fascinated by the way thoughtful design can influence how people live, gather, and connect.

What began as a personal interest eventually grew into Design Lifestyles, the interior design firm I founded more than 22 years ago. Through perseverance, education and continuous learning, along with a commitment to serving clients well, I built the company into an award-winning design firm that has had the privilege of transforming homes, offices and lives throughout the Dallas area and across the United States. Along the way, I learned that successful design is about much more than selecting furnishings and finishes…it is about understanding people, solving problems creatively, and designing environments that support the way they want to live.

About three years ago, I became aware of Heritage School of Interior Design and took a deep dive into its curriculum. I was immediately impressed by its comprehensive approach to education, combining creative design training, technical skills, business development specific to the industry, and hands-on industry experience through time spent in the field with design professionals. It was the first program I had encountered that truly reflected every aspect of what it takes to succeed as a professional interior designer.

The more I learned about the program, the more convinced I became that this level of education was needed in Texas. I knew that graduates who completed the Heritage curriculum would enter the workforce with both the knowledge and practical experience to contribute immediately within a design firm and be strong contenders in the industry. When the opportunity arose to bring Heritage School of Interior Design to Dallas, I felt compelled to do so. Drawing on more than two decades of experience within the Dallas design community, I have worked to ensure the curriculum remains relevant to the way designers practice in Texas while preserving the school’s long-standing commitment to preparing students for successful careers in the profession.

Today, I have the unique opportunity to combine my love for design, business, and education by helping aspiring designers develop the skills, confidence, and professional foundation needed to build meaningful careers in the industry.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I began the process of bringing Heritage School of Interior Design to Dallas, I encountered an entirely new learning curve. While I was confident in my interior design knowledge and had strong business skills that were honed while leading my design firm, I quickly realized that operating a licensed career school in Texas required a completely different area of expertise. I had to learn the regulations, compliance requirements, administrative processes, and educational standards that govern career schools in the state. Bringing a respected educational model to Texas meant not only understanding design education, but also navigating regulatory requirements, building awareness in the marketplace, assembling a strong instructional team, and ensuring the curriculum remained relevant to today’s evolving design industry.

Looking back, every obstacle ultimately became an opportunity for growth. The challenges taught me resilience, strengthened my leadership skills, and reminded me that no matter how much experience we have, there is always something new to learn. That mindset has helped me grow not only as a business owner and educator, but also as a designer.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve always been a creative person. One of my earliest creative outlets was sewing, which I learned at a young age. It taught me the importance of color, scale, texture, craftsmanship, and attention to detail, all the skills that would later become foundational to my career in interior design.

As a stay-at-home mom, I had more time than extra money, so I became passionate about learning how to create the best possible home environment for my family. I immersed myself in everything I could find about design, renovations, construction, and furnishings. What started as a personal pursuit eventually grew into my full-service interior design firm that today specializes in residential interiors, renovations, new construction, aging-in-place design, and thoughtfully curated light commercial environments, helping clients create spaces that are both beautiful and functional across a variety of settings.

One area that has become especially meaningful to me is universal design. As a Certified Living In Place Professional (CLIPP), I believe great design should be both beautiful and functional, supporting people through every stage of life. Whether designing for young families, busy professionals, or homeowners planning to age in place or have guests who need accommodations when visiting, I enjoy creating spaces that improve the way people live while maintaining a sense of beauty and personal style.

Today, Design Lifestyles has evolved far beyond what I could have imagined when I first started. I am especially proud that my daughter has been part of the business for more than thirteen years and now serves as Director of Operations and Senior Designer leading the team of six employees. Watching her grow into a talented design professional and trusted leader has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Her leadership allows me to devote time to Heritage School of Interior Design Dallas while knowing our clients continue to receive exceptional service and design expertise.

What sets me apart is that my work extends beyond designing beautiful homes. Through both my design firm and Heritage School of Interior Design Dallas, I have the opportunity to impact not only the spaces people live and work in, but also the careers and futures of aspiring designers. I am proud of the projects we have completed, but I am most proud of the people whose lives have been impacted my the spaces we create as well as those who I have been able to mentor, encourage, and help succeed. Creating beautiful interiors is rewarding, but helping others discover their potential and build meaningful careers is the legacy I hope to leave behind.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
One of the best pieces of advice I can give an emerging design professional is to become involved in professional organizations such as the Interior Design Society (IDS) and the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). While design education and technical skills are important, the relationships you build throughout your career can be equally valuable.

For me, developing a network of like-minded professionals who encourage one another, share knowledge, celebrate successes, and help navigate challenges has been invaluable. Some of my closest industry relationships began through professional organizations, industry events, and volunteer leadership opportunities. Those connections have led to friendships, mentorships, collaborations, business opportunities, and lifelong learning.

When it comes to finding a mentor, I encourage people to focus less on asking someone to formally be their mentor and more on becoming actively engaged in the design community. Attend events, volunteer, ask thoughtful questions, and be genuinely interested in learning from others. The strongest mentoring relationships often develop naturally over time through shared experiences and mutual respect.

The design industry is incredibly collaborative, and I have found that the most successful professionals are often the ones who are willing to share their knowledge and help others succeed. Building a strong professional network has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career, and I would encourage every emerging designer to invest in those relationships early and consistently.
