Daily Inspiration: Meet Mitzi Ocasio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitzi Ocasio.

Mitzi , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Well, my name is Mitzi. I write children’s books and host a podcast called Mitzi, Let’s Think About It, where I explore topics like self-awareness, perception, and personal growth to inspire reflection. I love questioning everything about life and wondering “what if” in so many different scenarios. So that’s what got me into writing children’s books to help kids step into their own “what if’s” in life. I believe that’s also what got me into my podcast, because it’s always been interesting to me how people think and perceive the world. Which is why my platform is great at exploring a variety of topics with people from all around the globe, because it allows everyone who tunes in to realize maybe we aren’t considering something. Or perhaps I haven’t thought about that before in that manner. Sometimes life and our perception are like a puzzle, and we have many missing pieces to complete our understanding. I believe that the way we think can shape our lives in more ways than one, so it’s essential to really think about how we choose to see the life we are living. Because of this movement, I have been a thought leader, introducing ideas into people’s lives to help heal, encourage, inspire, and even motivate them to think more deeply. I see that there are a lot of people who are just existing without actually understanding, or living on the surface level of life, not realizing that there are so many ways to think about one word, topic, or anything that comes with being human. And that’s my goal moving forward in life: to let people know that the mirror they are looking into to see their reflection gets stuck on why me, how I came to be. But never realizing that the mirror is actually a window, and when we stop looking at the surface of our reflection and look deeper, seeing past ourselves, we can find a world worth participating in that can not only change our own lives but the lives of everyone we encounter. So, we need to open the window, look around, and climb out and into the beautiful, scary, ugly, yet very much amazing world we are blessed to be a part of.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think anyone has much of a smooth road because the most significant obstacle we face is truly ourselves. Yes, there could be obstacles such as health issues, financial constraints, or a lack of guidance. But despite all those fundamental roadblocks, I think the biggest hurdle we have to overcome is ourselves and stop self-sabotaging. And it took me a long time to realize that I was my worst enemy, not believing in myself, not thinking I could do it, or even if it was really worth doing. But I also feel that even comparing ourselves with other people’s successes and accomplishments is another big hurdle that I, and many others, have to overcome, because comparison makes us undervalue the success we do have and fail to realize we’re making an impact. And I think that’s where I had to reevaluate my intentions. Why am I writing books? Why am I hosting a podcast? Is it to be famous or to make a change? Is it to become rich or to make a difference? Am I part of the problem or part of the solution? And once I asked myself those tough questions, I realized, yes. My intentions are in the right place; yes, I’m doing this for one single soul that can then change their life and, in return, change the lives of others. And I hope more people can realize that when we check our intentions, we can continue our path, even if it’s lonely or crowded.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I host a podcast called Mitzi, Let’s Think About It, where I discuss every topic under the sun. If you can think it, then we can talk about it. And I think that sets me apart from other podcasters who focus solely on a specific genre, like crime, sports, finance, or wellness. It allows people to find me at their time, and that will always be the right time for them. I don’t need to rush or push one episode over another because they are all valuable. They all have an opportunity to help someone in their path at the right time. And I think that’s what makes it such a success because I give people the choice to come back or to stick around for a specific episode. There’s no pressure to keep up with a season, chapters, or previous episodes, as many other podcasts do. It allows my audience to be themselves at the right time, and if it encourages them to check out other episodes or stay tuned for what’s to come, it’s a choice they can make on their own, and one I can accept and appreciate. On top of my podcast I am known as a children author. Which I am very proud of. I knew I always wanted to write and to get started with children’s book has been such a warm feeling inside knowing I’m reaching the next generation in a way that will make them wonder, explore or even just to consider our world differently by using our imaginations. By self-publishing my four children books I know I am doing my part to help the next generation move in this world utilizing there minds. And when parents let me know that their children enjoyed reading my books and ask to read one of my books at night for their bedtime routine makes me know that there is no point in stopping now but to know I’m only getting started.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I believe the podcasting industry is constantly evolving in its own way. We are changing the way people watch TV and listen to the radio. Podcasts are such a big deal that I’m grateful I have been in this industry for 6 years, and that I’m already scheduled out into next year because I have people from all walks of life believing in what I’m trying to do: to help people think. And I think one major shift I would like to make for my own podcast is to make it more Christian-focused. To give other faith believers a chance to share their testimony of how God showed up in their lives. I know that speaking about your own faith has become such a big taboo lately, and I believe this is the perfect time to use my platform to create that shift in perspective and give people a safe place to talk about and express their relationships with God.
