Today we’d like to introduce you to Portia Bruner.
Portia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Portia Bruner is the host of “Portia”—a nationally distributed talk show that’s now in its fourth season. Before her transition from FOX 5 Atlanta News anchor to talk show host in 2022, Portia built a reputation as a compassionate and dynamic storyteller who genuinely cares about the people whose life events she reported. She covered crime, breaking news, government affairs, natural disasters and human-interest stories. As a former consumer reporter, Portia has always had a passion for giving viewers valuable information they can use in their own lives.
Before joining FOX 5 Atlanta News in 2003, Portia was the consumer reporter for WTKR-TV in Norfolk, Virginia, and an anchor/reporter for WAPT-TV in Jackson, Mississippi. She started her professional career as a researcher and producer in the Consumer News Unit of NBC4-TV in Washington, D.C. — just a few weeks after she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Howard University in 1995.
The Denver, Colorado native became a vocal advocate for therapy and mental health awareness after overcoming her own struggles with depression, anxiety and a subsequent diagnosis of psychogenic stuttering that took her off the air for three months in 2017. She publicly and unapologetically shares the benefits of therapy, prayer and meditation in her own self-care routine.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been lots of challenges— a long bout of depression after divorce, an off-and-on tussle with self-doubt and imposter syndrome, learning to juggle the responsibilities of being a public figure while privately tending to the needs of my teenage sons and elderly mother. It’s a lot, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I’m grateful to be a talkshow host who gets to have meaningful conversations that inspire people and I’m even more grateful to have brilliant and busy sons and beautiful parents in their eighties who continue to thrive.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Portia’s show is designed to inform, empower and inspire people who value a daily dose of positivity. She prerecords several episodes every week while juggling public appearances and her responsibilities as the mother of a rising high school Senior and a rising Tuskegee University Junior.
‘Portia’ airs weekdays on Fox stations in Atlanta and San Francisco, weekday mornings on Fox Soul and at 12:30 a.m. in Washington, D.C. The show focuses on issues of faith, family, finances, physical health, mental health food and fun.
The show debuted in Fall 2022 and began its fourth season in Fall 2025. The podcast, “Portia Raw & Real” is available wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts and focuses on the more candid issues that can’t be discussed on daytime tv.
Portia Bruner brings decades of experience as a television journalist and motivational speaker to her role as a talk show host. From the legendary South African President Nelson Mandela to children giggling on the playground, she’s always loved talking to people whose stories leave the kind of impression that makes a difference in the lives of others. The opportunity to have candid and thought-provoking conversations—particularly with remarkable Black women from across the country—is just an extension of Portia’s mission to tell unforgettable stories about women, men and children of all backgrounds. “Everyone has a story to tell about how they turned a test into a testimony. My job is to share those stories in a way that inspires, empowers and educates others and I’m blessed to do that every day for a living,” said the 52 year old who’s called metro Atlanta home since December 2002.
Portia is also a visual artist whose acrylic and mixed paintings are often featured in group exhibits in Atlanta art galleries. She started painting as a form of art therapy in 2014.
What’s next?
I want to continue to tell stories that make people—especially Black women—feel seen, heard and empowered. I want to grow the show to a level where people can enjoy it worldwide. That but I trust that God will take care of the platform as long as I continue to take care of the people who trust me with their life stories.
I want to keep painting and exhibiting my artwork as well. That’s a wonderful outlet for me. It’s still a form of therapy and I always enjoy hearing how people interpret my pieces.
As a mother, I’m getting ready to send my second son off to college as my first son draws closer to graduation from Tuskegee University. they’re amazing young man and it’s a blessing to watch them grow from boys to magnificent men.
I’m not sure what the empty nest season will look like, but I’m looking forward to seeing what God has in store for me next.
