Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastien Ibeagha.
Hi Sebastien, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey started when I was young. I was born in Warri, Nigeria and soccer is the national sport. It’s the sport every kid wants to play and become a professional. So from a young age that’s all I wanted to do and I moved to the US when I was 9 which opened a lot of doors for in terms of academies that I could play with while in middle and high school. From there I was able to get a scholarship to Duke University, played all 4 years, then started my professional career in Denmark. I went on to play in Iceland before coming back to the US in 2016 and played for Houston, San Antonio, New York, and Los Angeles FC before coming back to Texas and playing for FC Dallas.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been the smoothest of roads especially in my professional career. After coming back from Denmark and Iceland I felt really good about my game and when I signed with my hometown club I didn’t play a single game that year with the first team and then my contract wasn’t renewed at the end of that season which left me in a gray area mentally because I thought I was good enough to play at that level but felt I was never really given a chance so the following season I signed with San Antonio FC in the USL Championship (2nd division) and played with a huge chip on my shoulder.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m central defender for FC Dallas. I’m known for being very vocal, physical, and hard working. I’m most proud of my work ethic and the belief in myself to not only bounce back into the MLS after a season in the USL but also the longevity of my career so far. I think what sets me apart from others is mainly my work ethic, I just always think I can be better on the field.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Being around family, being on the field playing and getting creative in my fashion and creative side brings me happiness
