Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharon Quinones.
Hi Sharon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Fabuela Q Cookies started as a creative outlet during a difficult season of my life. I’ve always loved baking, but what began as making cookies for family and friends gradually turned into something people were willing to pay for—and eventually, a business.
The name itself is personal. “Fabuela” is a combination of fabulous and abuela, a title I wear proudly. My logo includes roses in honor of my granddaughter, Liliana Rose, and also includes a blueberry in honor of my grandson, Malakai Elexander, whom we lost to Trisomy 18. While his time with us was brief, he remains a part of everything I do, and I wanted that reflected in my brand.
When Voyage Dallas first featured me a couple of years ago, I was still very much in the early stages of figuring things out. Since then, I’ve continued growing Fabuela Q Cookies while balancing a full-time career in banking. I’ve invested in new equipment, expanded into printed cookies and corporate branding opportunities, and have learned that running a small business requires just as much time spent on marketing, networking, and social media as it does baking.
Today, I specialize in custom decorated sugar cookies that help people celebrate life’s moments—from birthdays and baby showers to corporate events and client gifts. I’m also expanding into cookie decorating classes and actively pursuing larger opportunities such as corporate gifting, hospitality partnerships, weddings, and large-scale event orders.
Two years in, I’m still learning, still growing, and still occasionally figuring things out as I go. But that’s part of being a small business owner. What hasn’t changed is my goal: creating cookies that make people smile and helping them celebrate the moments that matter most.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. Like most small business owners, I’ve learned that the actual product is only part of the equation.
When I started, I thought the biggest challenge would be learning how to make beautiful cookies. What I’ve discovered is that baking is often the easiest part. The harder part is getting your business in front of the right people consistently. Social media can feel like a full-time job on its own, and figuring out how to market yourself without constantly giving away product for exposure has been a learning experience.
Another challenge has been balancing the business with a full-time career. There are plenty of late nights spent decorating cookies, answering inquiries, creating content, and working on business goals after already putting in a full day at work.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that growth isn’t always linear. There are busy weeks when you’re turning away orders, and there are slower periods that make you question everything. Over time, I’ve learned to focus less on comparing my journey to others and more on building a business that is sustainable for me.
That mindset has also led me to explore new opportunities beyond traditional custom orders. I’m expanding into cookie decorating classes, corporate gifting, branded logo cookies, and larger event orders. Those opportunities not only allow me to reach new customers, but they also help create a more balanced and sustainable business for the future.
The road definitely hasn’t been smooth, but every challenge has taught me something valuable, and I’m grateful for how much I’ve grown as both a baker and a business owner over the last two years.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I own Fabuela Q Cookies, a Fort Worth-based custom cookie business specializing in decorated sugar cookies for celebrations, corporate events, client gifts, and special occasions. Whether it’s a baby shower, birthday, graduation, wedding, grand opening, or company event, my goal is to create cookies that are just as memorable as the occasion they’re celebrating.
Over the last two years, I’ve expanded beyond traditional hand-decorated cookies and invested in direct-to-cookie printing technology, which allows me to create highly detailed logo cookies, branded corporate gifts, photo cookies, and custom designs that would be difficult to achieve by hand alone. That has opened the door to opportunities with businesses, realtors, event planners, restaurants, hotels, and organizations looking for unique ways to make an impression.
Let’s be honest—there are a lot of pretty cookies out there. What I’m most proud of is that customers consistently tell me my cookies taste as good as they look. I’ve worked hard to create a flavor and texture that people remember, and seeing that reflected in reviews and repeat orders means more to me than any social media metric ever could.
When Voyage Dallas first featured me, I was still trying to figure out what kind of business I wanted to build. Today, I’m intentionally expanding into cookie decorating classes, corporate gifting, hospitality partnerships, weddings, and larger-scale events while continuing to serve individual customers. My focus has shifted from simply taking orders to building a sustainable business that creates experiences and connections through cookies.
I think what sets me apart is that every order matters to me. Behind every cookie is a person celebrating something important, and I never want to lose sight of that. Whether someone orders a dozen cookies for a birthday or several hundred cookies for a corporate event, I want them to feel like they’re working with someone who genuinely cares about helping make their event special.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
One thing that surprises a lot of people is that Fabuela Q Cookies isn’t my full-time job. By day, I work in commercial banking as an SBA loan closer, and by night and weekends, I’m decorating cookies, answering inquiries, creating social media content, and building a business.
People often see the finished cookies and assume that’s the whole story, but most don’t realize how much happens behind the scenes—or that many of those cookies were decorated after a full day at the office. Running a small business while maintaining a full-time career has taught me a lot about discipline, time management, and perseverance.
The other thing people may not realize is that I’m probably just as obsessed with collecting cookie cutters as I am with making cookies. Let’s just say my collection is measured in the thousands, not the hundreds, and I may need an intervention at some point.
