Today we’d like to introduce you to An Nguyen
Hi An, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Xin Chao! Hello, I’m An Nguyen, the founder of The SEA Coffee Co., a Vietnamese coffee supply company. My journey to the United States began in late 2016, and now, eight years later, I proudly call Dallas my home.
Growing up in a devout Catholic family in Vietnam, I was instilled with the belief that one’s life should be dedicated to uplifting the community, a principle my Asian parents strongly emphasized. This upbringing fueled my lifelong dream of creating something that could bring genuine value to society.
I had four formative years working in a Food and Beverage company, before graduating from the University of Texas at Arlington with a degree in Finance. It was during this time that I realized the immense potential of Vietnamese coffee, renowned as the second-largest coffee producer in the world. I envisioned a venture that would not only introduce this exquisite coffee to the US market but also create a positive impact on the lives of coffee farmers in Vietnam.
In 2023, this vision became a reality with the birth of The SEA Coffee Co. Our mission is twofold: to provide American consumers with high-quality Vietnamese coffee at affordable prices and to support the hardworking farmers who make it all possible. By bridging the gap between these two worlds, we aim to enrich lives on both sides of the globe, one cup of coffee at a time.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s our one-year anniversary, and I couldn’t be prouder that we’re still on the path we envisioned from the start. Reflecting on this journey, I can say without hesitation that it has been anything but easy—especially for me as a foreigner navigating a new landscape.
Coffee is far more than just a drink; it’s a science. Entering this industry requires mastering an extensive body of knowledge. You need a solid foundation, plus an in-depth understanding of the complexities that come with it.
Importing and exporting pose another significant challenge. This is an entirely different industry, demanding its own expertise to ensure our coffee travels seamlessly from Vietnamese farms to our client’s hands.
And then there’s the art of coffee roasting. Roasting isn’t just a process; it’s a craft. As a roaster, I create art to serve café owners, who in turn aim to delight millions of their customers.
Every step has been a steep learning curve. Starting from scratch, I’ve made countless mistakes, each a lesson in resilience. Even now, I continue to make mistakes, though fewer than before.
Being a foreigner adds another layer of complexity. I’ve had to learn and adapt to a new culture, all while building a business from the ground up. But despite the difficulties, staying excited about what lies ahead—whether good or bad—has been my driving force.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Here’s the most exciting part: every time I get to introduce our company, my enthusiasm is boundless.
The SEA Coffee, which stands for South East Asian Coffee. We are a wholesale coffee supplier, specializing in authentic Vietnamese coffee sourced directly from the lush farms of Vietnam.
Our offerings are not just about coffee; they’re about crafting unique experiences. We provide customizable blending and labeling, tailored to create a distinctive identity for your brand. Additionally, we offer comprehensive consulting services for aspiring coffee shop owners, helping you with everything from recipes and menus to equipment selection.
While many people know there are two main types of coffee beans, Robusta and Arabica, what truly sets coffee apart is its growing conditions—climate, soil, and altitude—all of which impart distinct flavors, bodies, and profiles. By expertly blending Robusta and Arabica beans, we can create countless exciting flavors, each one a potential signature coffee for your shop.
Our goal is to help coffee shop owners develop their unique signature tastes, delighting customers with every cup. Your success is our purpose, and together, we can elevate the coffee experience to new heights.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One surprising thing that most people might not know about me is that I have a deep passion for playing chess. Growing up, I spent hours practicing the game, although I can never be a GM. This practice taught me strategic thinking, patience, and the importance of foresight—qualities that have deeply influenced how I run The SEA Coffee Co.
Chess, like the coffee business, requires a careful balance of strategy and creativity. This hidden passion has helped me develop a strategic approach to coffee blending and roasting, ensuring that every batch we produce is thoughtfully crafted. It also reminds me of the importance of planning and adapting, skills that are essential in navigating the complexities of the coffee industry. My love for chess keeps my mind sharp and helps me bring a unique perspective to our business, ultimately enriching the experience we offer to our customers.
