Today we’d like to introduce you to Baylee Compton.
Hi Baylee, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I have always had a passion for fashion and people! I graduated with a B.A. in Communication from Illinois State University in the spring of 2016. Since then, I have obtained and upheld leadership positions for a well-renowned restaurant in Dallas. After some time in the restaurant industry, I realized I needed a creative outlet and was trying to figure out how to “scratch that itch”. In the summer of 2019, my cousin and I were talking about our hopes for the future and how amazing it would be if we could create our own business.
We knew that we wanted to focus on positive expression and encouraging women to look and feel their best – and what better way to do that than through fashion! With a love of clothing and communication, we came up with a hybrid boutique concept that had the ability to reach hundreds of women through online platforms and pop-up events across the country. Our shop is inspired by our personal styles and experiences but with our customer’s mind. We launched Elly Jade Boutique in February 2020 and it has been a rollercoaster ride ever since!
From global pandemics to rained out events, we have had our fair share of hurdles. That said, we have also had many successes connecting with our customers and are excited to see where this crazy world takes us next!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have definitely been challenges! Elly Jade Boutique launched one week before the pandemic hit and as you can imagine, there were some major ramifications. Our initial business model was 75% in-person events and 25% online. Due to the pandemic, we were not able to participate in pop-up events and had to focus 100% of our effort on online marketing the first 6 months. Since we did not have a brick and mortar, the pop-up events were going to be our way to get the brand name out to the public.
For a new business, this was extremely difficult because the online market is so saturated. But, we did not let the “seemingly impossible” bring us down! We grew our organic following by creating captivating videos and images and use social media tools to build our online brand.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Elly Jade Boutique?
Elly Jade is owned and operated by two cousins, Baylee Elyse and Riley Jade. We specialize in women’s fashion and have a hybrid business model that allows us to reach customers virtually and in-person without a storefront. With our website and social media presence, customers can shop in the comfort of their own home, or come to one of our pop-up events for a real life shopping experience. We have a unique selection of items that are sourced in small quantities to ensure each piece purchased from our shop has a “one-of-a-kind” feel.
We believe this business model and purchasing standards sets us apart from other boutiques because we provide quality and flexibility. Last year, we had the opportunity to collaborate with an organic skin care business and were able to share their amazing handcrafted products with our customers. We are proud to have the opportunity to partner with other small businesses and support one another through entrepreneurship. With a passion for fashion and positive expression, you can always count on us to find the latest and greatest trends!
Our shop is inspired by our personal styles and experiences but with YOU mind. We hope these looks can transpire into your own life and make you feel bold and rare when shopping Elly Jade.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I would not categorize myself as a very lucky person, but I do believe in luck! I think you can manifest your own “luck” by being in the right place at the right time – typically with the right people. In order to create luck for myself in the business world, I look for an opportunity in every situation.
Who can I connect with? How can I create brand awareness? When I think of these questions, I make room for change to happen. This mental shift allows me to stay flexible and welcome any “luck” that comes my way!
