Today we’d like to introduce you to Denisse Mejia.
Hi Denisse, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey into lactation support started long before I became an IBCLC or founded Texas Breastfeeding Center. As a first-generation Mexican-American woman, I saw firsthand how language barriers, lack of culturally relevant education, and limited access to support often left families feeling overwhelmed during pregnancy and postpartum.
After becoming a mother myself and working closely with breastfeeding families, I realized that many parents weren’t struggling because they lacked dedication—they were struggling because they lacked support. I became passionate about helping families navigate feeding challenges with evidence-based information, compassion, and practical guidance.
What began as one-on-one lactation consultations eventually grew into Texas Breastfeeding Center, a bilingual practice serving families across the Dallas-Fort Worth area and the Rio Grande Valley. Our mission is to make high-quality lactation care accessible, inclusive, and culturally responsive for every family, regardless of their feeding goals.
Today, we provide prenatal education, postpartum lactation support, pumping guidance, and insurance-covered consultations in both English and Spanish. We’ve expanded our network participation with multiple insurance plans to reduce barriers to care and continue to focus on meeting families where they are—whether that’s in their homes, virtually, or within the communities we serve.
Looking back, the journey has been filled with challenges, growth, and learning, but the heart of the work remains the same: helping parents feel informed, supported, and confident during one of the most transformative seasons of their lives. Every family has a unique story, and I consider it an honor to be part of that journey. Knowing that our work can help a parent reach their feeding goals, feel more confident, or simply feel less alone is what continues to inspire me every day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but I think that’s true for most entrepreneurs building something meaningful.
One of the biggest challenges has been balancing my passion for serving families with the realities of running a business. As healthcare providers, we’re trained to care for people—not necessarily to manage finances, marketing, insurance credentialing, operations, technology, and everything else that comes with entrepreneurship. Building Texas Breastfeeding Center required me to learn an entirely new skill set while continuing to provide high-quality care to families.
Another challenge has been addressing barriers that many families face when seeking lactation support. For years, access to care was often limited by insurance coverage, language barriers, transportation challenges, or simply a lack of awareness that help was available. Expanding access has required a tremendous amount of advocacy, community outreach, and persistence. Navigating insurance credentialing alone can be a lengthy and complex process, but it has been worth it because it allows more families to receive support without the burden of significant out-of-pocket costs.
There have also been personal challenges along the way. Like many business owners, I’ve experienced moments of self-doubt and uncertainty, especially during periods of growth. Building a business while balancing family life and the responsibilities that come with motherhood isn’t always easy. There were (and still are!) many late nights, difficult decisions, and moments where I had to trust the vision even when the path forward wasn’t entirely clear.
What has kept me going is the impact. Every time a parent tells me they reached their feeding goals, felt supported during a difficult postpartum experience, or finally found answers after weeks of struggling, it reminds me why this work matters. Those moments make every challenge worthwhile.
As you know, we’re big fans of Texas Breastfeeding Center. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Texas Breastfeeding Center is a bilingual maternal and infant feeding support practice dedicated to supporting families throughout pregnancy, postpartum, and their infant feeding journey. We provide evidence-based lactation care, prenatal breastfeeding education, pumping support, return-to-work planning, and personalized feeding guidance through in-home visits, telehealth consultations, and community-based services.
At our core, we believe every family deserves access to high-quality, compassionate support regardless of their language, background, location, or feeding goals. While breastfeeding support is often viewed as a luxury or something only available to a small group of families, our mission is to make that care accessible and inclusive.
One thing that sets us apart is our commitment to serving both English- and Spanish-speaking families. As a bilingual practice founded by a first-generation Mexican-American IBCLC, cultural responsiveness isn’t an afterthought—it’s woven into everything we do. We understand that effective support goes beyond translating information; it means meeting families where they are, understanding their unique experiences, and providing care that feels approachable and empowering.
We’re also proud of the work we’ve done to increase access through insurance coverage. We’ve intentionally pursued contracts with multiple insurance networks so that more families can receive lactation support with little to no out-of-pocket cost. Too often, families don’t seek help because they assume they can’t afford it. Removing those barriers has been one of our proudest accomplishments.
Beyond individual consultations, we see ourselves as community advocates. Whether we’re teaching prenatal classes, participating in local events, collaborating with healthcare providers, supporting workplace pumping parents, or sharing education online, our goal is to normalize breastfeeding support and ensure families know they don’t have to navigate these challenges alone.
What I’m most proud of is the trust families place in us during such a vulnerable season of life. Feeding a baby is about so much more than nutrition—it’s connected to confidence, mental health, family relationships, and a parent’s overall postpartum experience. Being able to walk alongside families during that journey is both a privilege and the driving force behind everything we do.
At the end of the day, Texas Breastfeeding Center isn’t just about breastfeeding. It’s about helping families feel informed, supported, and confident as they care for their babies and themselves.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
One thing I’ve learned through both motherhood and entrepreneurship is that meaningful change often starts with small acts of support.
Every day, I have the privilege of meeting families during one of the most transformative and vulnerable seasons of their lives. While infant feeding may be what brings them through our doors, the conversations often become much bigger than breastfeeding or pumping. They’re about confidence, identity, mental health, relationships, returning to work, and navigating the challenges of parenthood.
If there’s one thing I’d like readers to take away, it’s that parents were never meant to do this alone. We thrive in community. Whether support comes from family, friends, healthcare professionals, or other parents, having someone in your corner can make all the difference.
As for Texas Breastfeeding Center, we’re just getting started. My vision has always been bigger than providing lactation consultations. I want to continue building a trusted resource where families can find education, support, advocacy, and community throughout their parenting journey. If our work helps even one family feel more confident, less isolated, and more empowered to make the decisions that are right for them, then we’re fulfilling our purpose.
The best part of this work isn’t building a business—it’s witnessing families discover that they’re far more capable than they ever realized.
