Exploring Life & Business with Ronald Davis of Thrive NOLA Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronald Davis.

Hi Ronald, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Ronald Davis, a New Orleans native with a background deeply rooted in health, wellness, sports medicine, and entrepreneurship. My journey started long before Thrive NOLA Spa officially opened. Growing up, I was always passionate about sports, movement, performance, and recovery, especially after experiencing my own sports and injury recovery journey. That passion led me to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine and a Master of Science in Sports Management, while also building experience in athletics, education, rehabilitation, and wellness environments. Over the years, I worked in clinics, health clubs, schools, colleges, and professional athletes, 2015 NFL Carolina Panthers which gave me a broad understanding of both recovery and performance care.

Entrepreneurship has also always been a part of my life. I started my first ventures as a child, and over time I learned how to combine business with purpose. In 2018, I officially launched Thrive NOLA Spa alongside my sister, Raven Davis. Our vision was to create more than just a traditional spa experience. We wanted to build a wellness-centered environment that blended recovery, relaxation, education, and genuine human connection.

The business truly evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many businesses, we faced uncertainty and major challenges, but we adapted. We transformed a previously closed Airbnb space into what became a family-oriented spa and wellness concept. That season taught us resilience, creativity, and the importance of serving people during stressful times. From there, Thrive NOLA Spa continued to grow through word of mouth, consistency, and a commitment to quality care.

Today, Thrive NOLA Spa has become known for integrating therapeutic massage, skincare, recovery services, and wellness experiences in a way that reflects both hospitality and health. Located in the French Quarter of New Orleans, we serve locals, tourists, athletes, professionals, and anyone seeking restoration. Our mission has always been to help people reset physically, mentally, and emotionally while creating an atmosphere that feels welcoming, professional, and intentional.

In addition to operating Thrive NOLA Spa, I also serve in education as the Program Director for the Massage Therapy Program at a local College. Being able to mentor future therapists while continuing to grow our wellness business has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey. I believe wellness is not just a luxury, it is an important part of how people sustain performance, manage stress, and improve overall quality of life.

As we continue growing, our vision is expanding beyond traditional spa services into a more comprehensive wellness and recovery model that includes advanced recovery therapies, education, community wellness initiatives, and expansion into additional markets in the future. Thrive NOLA Spa started with passion, faith, family support, and a willingness to adapt during difficult moments, and those same principles continue to guide everything we do today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, especially in the wellness and hospitality industry, we faced challenges financially, operationally, and personally while building Thrive NOLA Spa. One of the biggest challenges was starting and growing during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The wellness and service industries were heavily impacted, and there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding tourism, staffing, safety, and consumer confidence. We had to learn how to adapt quickly while still maintaining quality service and taking care of our team and clients.

Another challenge was learning how to scale responsibly. As the business grew, so did the complexity of operations. Managing staffing, scheduling, marketing, customer experience, systems, and finances all at the same time required constant adjustment and growth as a leader. One of the biggest lessons I learned is that entrepreneurship is not just about having vision; it is also about building structure, systems, and consistency behind that vision.

Like many small business owners, funding and cash flow were also real challenges. There were moments where we had to be extremely resourceful and make difficult decisions while continuing to push the business forward. We reinvested heavily into the company, learned through trial and error, and stayed committed even during uncertain seasons.

Staffing in the wellness industry has also been a challenge at times. Finding people who align with the culture, values, professionalism, and level of care we wanted to provide took time. Building a strong team and maintaining consistency in customer experience is something we continue to work on every day.

Personally, balancing leadership, entrepreneurship, education, family, and personal growth has also required sacrifice. There were long days, setbacks, moments of doubt, and lessons learned the hard way. But those challenges also helped shape the business into what it is today. They taught me resilience, patience, adaptability, and the importance of staying mission-focused even during difficult periods.

At the same time, every obstacle created an opportunity for growth. Many of the systems, services, and ideas we use today were born out of challenges we had to overcome. Looking back, those difficult seasons helped strengthen both me and the company, and they continue to influence how we approach growth, wellness, leadership, and service today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Thrive NOLA Spa is a wellness and recovery spa located in the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans. We specialize in therapeutic massage, advanced skincare treatments, wellness recovery services, and customized experiences designed to help people feel restored physically, mentally, and emotionally. Our clients range from local residents and professionals to tourists, athletes, and individuals seeking stress relief, pain management, recovery, or self-care experiences.
What sets us apart is our blend of hospitality, wellness, recovery, and education. My background in sports medicine, athletic performance, and rehabilitation heavily influences how we approach care. We are not just focused on relaxation; we are focused on helping people truly recover, reset, and improve their overall wellness. Whether someone is coming in for deep tissue work, a facial, recovery therapy, or simply to decompress from life, our goal is to create a meaningful experience that goes beyond a traditional spa visit.
One thing I am especially proud of is how Thrive NOLA Spa has evolved into a community-centered brand. We built this business with resilience, family support, and a commitment to quality service, especially during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the years, we have continued expanding our services and vision to include wellness technologies, recovery-focused therapies, and elevated self-care experiences while maintaining a welcoming and authentic culture.
Brand-wise, I am most proud that people often describe Thrive NOLA Spa as an experience rather than simply a service. From the atmosphere and team culture to the personalized care and recovery-based approach, we work hard to make every guest feel valued and restored. As we continue growing, our vision is to further expand into wellness and recovery services while continuing to represent New Orleans through hospitality, healing, and community impact.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about New Orleans is the culture, resilience, and sense of community. There is truly no city like it. The people here are passionate, creative, expressive, and deeply connected to tradition, family, music, food, and celebration. New Orleans has a unique energy that you can feel the moment you step into the city. As someone born and raised here, I’ve always appreciated how authentic the culture is and how much pride people have in where they come from. It is a city built on history, diversity, hospitality, and perseverance, and that spirit has heavily influenced both me personally and the culture we’ve built at Thrive NOLA Spa.
I also love that New Orleans supports entrepreneurship and individuality. People here appreciate experiences, storytelling, wellness, hospitality, and connection, which creates an amazing environment for businesses like ours to grow. Being located in the French Quarter allows us to meet people from all over the world while still serving the local community that helped build us.
At the same time, like many people who live here, I think one of the biggest challenges is infrastructure and long-term economic growth opportunities. New Orleans is an incredible city with so much talent and potential, but there are still struggles with crime, infrastructure, education, and retaining young professionals and businesses. Sometimes it can feel like the city has all the ingredients to be even greater than it already is, but growth can move slower than people hope.
Even with those challenges, though, New Orleans has a resilience that continues to inspire me. The city has overcome adversity time and time again, and the people here continue to create, build, support one another, and push forward. That spirit is one of the reasons I’m proud to live here, build here, and continue investing into this community through wellness, education, and business.
