Exploring Life & Business with Tiffany Chen of Modern Vue Eyecare

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Chen.

Hi Tiffany, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Debbie Wei and I met in 2021, introduced by a mutual friend. While I had dreamed of private practice, Debbie wasn’t ready to take on the challenge solo while raising two children. We both also discussed how it would be nice to have a partner to open up a practice with, which is when our brainstorming started. We had a lot of discussions about what we would ideally want in a practice, timelines, our preferred work flow, and so much more. We ultimately decided that our goals and visions matched, and this led us to start the process of opening up our office.

We began searching for the ideal location in 2022, seeking a Vision Source space. We signed a lease in 2023 for a 1,700-square-foot new-build shell in central Plano. Construction began in late 2023, with both doctors contributing ideas to the functional and inviting layout.

Walls were framed and built, polished concrete flooring was poured and after palettes upon palettes of deliveries, the practice opened in March 2024.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were some hiccups along the way.

We had a pipe leak after a winter freeze in 2025, and that ended up mildly flooding our office. While we were operational, it was not ideal and luckily our property managers provided industrial powered fans to dry out our room. That same year, shortly after I returned from maternity leave, we had a break in in the middle of the night, and Debbie and I found ourselves at the office with police officers at 2am cleaning up broke glass and boarding up our door.

The economical changes have also been a challenge as patients are less likely to want to purchase glasses or contact lenses, as they are more concerned with spending. Some of our patients, or their spouses, have been laid off and no longer have insurance, which has also affected the number of patients walking in our doors.

We’ve been impressed with Modern Vue Eyecare, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Debbie and I are both optometrists with different interests and strengths, but this is what makes us such a great duo. I focus on business processes and efficiency, while Debbie leverages her experience in staff training and patient relations. I completed a residency in cornea and contact lenses and offer scleral lens fittings and I specialize in corneal disease management, along with myopia control. Dr. Wei enjoys seeing the geriatric population, managing diseases like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and more. Both doctors see patients in primary eye care, with emphasis on the specialties of each doctor, as well as providing emergency eyecare and post op care for cataract surgery and refractive surgery. Something that was important to us is that we wanted to give back to our community, so we opted to participate in a program to see Veteran’s through the Veteran Evaluation Services program.

We pride ourselves in a modern approach to optometry. Patients have embraced the no-puff eye exams, a VR headset for visual field testing, and high-tech tools like Topcon’s autophoropter and Optikam for digital eyewear measurements. We sell Meta glasses, and are often looking at new technology in eyewear to bring in. We also have a machine to measure the axial length for myopia control patients, and we just purchased and installed a slit lamp camera so we can capture images of various diseases to allow us to monitor certain conditions. We value quality of the exams, so we take our time with our patients to deliver optimal care.

We’re really proud of the practice we have built thus far and are excited to see how our office evolves as we continue to grow.

Any big plans?
We are focused on growing our practice, staying up to date on technological advances, and may consider another location in the far distant future. We are also interested in getting into more research studies where we can be on the forefront of new technology or medical devices.
