Exploring Life & Business with Vesna Smith of Velež SkinTech

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vesna Smith.

Hi Vesna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I have worked in the luxury cosmetic industry for over 20 years. During this time, I got to know my now business partner, Jose Villegas, who approached me to talk about this amazing biotechnology-derived material that was being used in the medical field. Velež’s white biotech cellulose material is cultivated in Germany with an incredible eye for detail.

Our partner scientists developed an infinitely dense fiber network of bacterial cellulose that can retain a market-leading amount of water. Velež by Vesna was born in May 2020 in the middle of the pandemic, making it a challenging start. But, we could not resist waiting any longer as we knew it would take some time to get the brand ready to launch. Once the brand was developed, it was time to attack the market.

However, most industry trade shows were canceled due to the pandemic. At the start, we were going door to door to visit med spas, dermatologists, and plastic surgery practices to show them our product. As you can imagine this process was not easy and we were rejected by all places we visited. Finally, we hit a lucky break meeting Taylor Siemens, Nurse Practitioner and Medical Director of Vitalyc in Dallas.

Taylor instantly understood the unique properties and quality of Velež. She eagerly made warm introductions to key leaders in the community, giving us an important push in the right direction. Sometimes, one well-intentioned person can make a difference. Today, we’re fortunate in having some of the world’s leading dermatologists, medical spas, and plastic surgery practices as our clients.

We’re thrilled to see the medical aesthetic community recognize the benefits of Velež and how it can make a difference in treatments. As the beauty industry grows to be ever-more scientific and demanding, we understand that the challenge of establishing yourself in the market requires many things but most importantly an irreplicable product speaks for itself. For us, the proof is in Veleź material and we welcome everyone to experience it for themselves.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been an easy road. But, we were not expecting it to be any different. We knew we would be launching a new brand in the middle of the pandemic and that it would be an uphill road ahead of us. However, we believed Velež’s quality would speak for itself. In the end, the product itself opened the door for us. Professionals in the aesthetic medicine industry know what’s good and what isn’t.

When practitioners see and feel the difference in our quality, their eyes light up in knowing how Velež can be an asset to elevate their client experience and improve treatment results. It was not easy to launch a brand going door to door as it is extremely tough to deal with constant rejection. However, we knew Veleź would eventually break through and get into the right hands.

We’ve been impressed with Velež SkinTech LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
During my previous professional life, many opportunities crossed my path, but none were as unique and as bold as launching a face mask with no active ingredients at all. What is inside our mask? Only water and our natural fiber network. This is our unique sales proposition. Think of this, how well does a mask have to be for it to be the best in the market even if it has no active ingredients at all?

People have been so quick to turn to the latest and greatest ingredients that they have forgotten how powerful and beneficial water can truly be when it is properly delivered to the skin. Having my brands means having the freedom to create. I love working at events, forming relationships, and learning directly from our professional partners, doctors, and practitioners.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Dallas. The restaurant scene is awesome, it has great shopping, and it couldn’t be located any better for traveling purposes. Dallas has a great business climate but also a laid-back spirit. You can tell it’s a city that’s growing in the right direction. Sometimes I don’t like the overextended summertime. When you get more than 30 days with temperature going over 100 it makes me look back to the northeast to take a break from the heat.
