Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Charlotte Ford.
Hi Dr. Charlotte, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began my career in education in 1998 as a science teacher in Arlington ISD, where I spent seven years in the classroom developing a passion for student achievement and instructional excellence. From there, I moved into campus leadership as an Assistant Principal at the same high school where I started my teaching career, serving in that role for five years.
My next opportunity was as a middle school principal, where I served for four years. During that time, our campus became the first AVID Demonstration School in Mansfield ISD, a milestone that reflected our commitment to college and career readiness and high expectations for all students.
I then served as a high school principal for two years before transitioning to district-level leadership. Since then, I have held several central administration roles focused on improving teaching, learning, and student outcomes across entire school systems.
Today, I serve as the Chief Academic Officer for Cedar Hill ISD, where I lead academic programs and initiatives designed to ensure every student has access to high-quality instruction and opportunities for future success. Looking back, each step of my journey—from classroom teacher to district leader—has reinforced my belief that strong relationships, high expectations, and a focus on student achievement are the keys to transforming schools and changing lives.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Public education is constantly evolving, and one of the few constants throughout my career has been change. Educators today must navigate shifting expectations, policy changes, funding challenges, and state accountability systems, all while maintaining a focus on what is best for students.
One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that success is highly dependent on context. Every campus, district, and community has unique strengths and challenges. There have been times when circumstances were not ideal, resources were limited, or conditions made it difficult to implement the changes we knew would benefit students. Those situations often required creativity, persistence, and the ability to build consensus among diverse stakeholders.
While those challenges were not always easy, they have been some of the most valuable experiences in my career. They taught me the importance of adaptability, relationship-building, and staying focused on student outcomes, even when the path forward is not clear. Ultimately, overcoming obstacles and helping schools improve despite difficult circumstances has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey in education.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I would not say that luck has played a role in my life or career AT ALL. Personally, I believe that everything in my life is providential. I believe there is a purpose behind the opportunities, challenges, successes, and setbacks that I have experienced throughout my journey.
When I look back over my career—from starting as a science teacher in 1998 to serving today as Chief Academic Officer of Cedar Hill ISD—I can see how each experience prepared me for the next. Some opportunities came at unexpected times, and some challenges seemed difficult to understand in the moment, but each one contributed to my growth as a leader and educator.
That perspective has also shaped how I approach leadership. Rather than focusing on luck or chance, I focus on preparation, hard work, faith, and being ready when opportunities present themselves. I believe that we are called to steward the responsibilities we are given and to make the most of every opportunity to serve others.
In education, there are certainly circumstances beyond our control, but I have learned that perseverance, integrity, and a commitment to doing what is best for students matter far more than luck. Looking back, I am grateful for the path that has led me here and for the people, experiences, and lessons that have helped shape both my career and my purpose.
