Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarrett Florea.
Hi Jarrett, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Nick Cano and Jarrett Florea met doing standup comedy open mics. We were both getting to the point of producing shows of our own, Made to Order and Trauma Dumping, when Jarrett decided to approach Nick about co producing together. Our shows were some of the more unique concepts and Jarrett was trying to get into promoting in more creative ways. With the two of us and our friends helping us out, we’ve started building Dead Froggy Productions, creating content, more interesting promotions, and more comedy shows at different locations. Now we not only run those shows monthly, but we have a weekly open mic, a weekly show, and podcasts. Our goal is to bring more laughter through unique shows, to give local comedians more opportunities, and to hopefully make more people aware of the local comedy scene around them and turn them into regular attendees.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a completely smooth road for Dead Froggy Productions. When you’re at the lower levels in comedy it’s hard to find people and places that will give you opportunities. Some people think we’re miracle workers and are gonna pack a room the first show instead of giving us time to build. Luckily we’ve started working with some places that see the work we’re putting in and are allowing us to build consistency. Specifically Julio Avila from Crabs and Laughs Comedy Club, and Chris Whetstone from Distribution Bar have been extra supportive and have given us great opportunities to do stuff at their venues.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dead Froggy Productions ?
Dead Froggy is a comedy production company, focused on putting on standup comedy shows, but we also have a couple of podcasts, create sketches for social media, and run a collaborative workshop open mic for comics of any level. Something we noticed is a lot of people were just putting out fliers or low effort promos for shows that were just standard showcases, so to stand out we treat promo videos like sketches that could stand alone on their own alongside interesting show concepts. Something else we are very much interested in is collaborating with others in the community and pushing others to get creative with their work. Since we’ve started this project we’ve already noticed many comedians moving in the same direction, whether that’s in part because of us or others just happened to notice what we were, we are glad to see the community evolving and hopefully making more people aware of the local comedy scene. We are most proud of our fellow comedians who want to work with us and bring new ideas or critiques which allows us to improve on all that we do. I think we created a fun and interesting brand that naturally attracts people to it, and shows that will hopefully keep them coming back. Our show Made to Order is considered our flagship and results in a ton of fun for audiences and comedians alike. Audiences put topics into a bucket that a few comedians will draw from and use to create new sets that they present at the end of the show. To give them time to write, other comedians will perform their sets and can riff on anything left in the bucket. At the end of the show those new jokes written based off the audience prompts are presented. Merch is another thing we are trying to focus on to help spread the brand. We have put out some shirts and stickers and are hoping that we can attract more people to shows so we can afford to stock up again and put out new designs and products, so far our current merch has been a hit!
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
We are still in the building phases of this journey, only being less than a year in, and look forward to the future. We appreciate anyone who supports us and hope to see people come to and re-attend our shows. Anyone that is looking to collaborate, sponsor, or just want to reach out in support we very much appreciate it. This is definitely something that we want to be a staple of DFW comedy, and hope to get to a point that everyone benefits as we continue to grow.
