Hidden Gems: Meet Kaylan Birks of Birks Enterprise

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylan Birks.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started Birks Enterprise Branding because I realized there was a need for brand to meet creativity. A lot of people want to start a business, but don’t know the first thing about running a business. They see that a business provides a product or service and makes money and think they can do the same thing but it’s obviously much more than that. I wanted to help small business owners, build a brand they’ll love and bring awareness to their target audience.

Some people already have businesses but it’s time for a rebrand or they have a business that isn’t doing as well as they’d hope and they’d like some guidance, well that’s where I put on my PR hat to create and implement a plan to help their struggling business. The first step in owning a business is your Brand Image and Identity, and people lack awareness in that aspect. I am nowhere near the success I’m aiming for, but I’ve made it thus far with consistency, dedication, and research. Lots of research!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I wish I could say this has been easy, but I struggled with finding clientele for so long. Marketing was not my strong suit and I know that’s very vital for a business to connect with their customers, and maintain a reputable brand. I started this business while in college, so I was in the midst of taking classes like marketing and public relations where I was able to learn from those courses and apply it to my work life. I also struggled with finding the right price for my work. I felt as though I was low-balling myself all the time because I was concerned that my prices would scare customers away. But the quality and quantity of my work matched what I was charging so I had to realize every prospect can’t be my client. Those that value their business and don’t mind investing in the right tools will do so and those who don’t, won’t.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Birks Enterprise?
Birks Enterprise is a company that offers multiple services to help shape your brand’s identity and image. Whether you’re seeking to create a new business or wanting to redesign and redevelop your current one, Birks Enterprise has the tools designed for you. The main service that I provide is logos and brand consultation services. I recently added custom websites as a part of the package as well. What sets my business apart from the others is that I value the quality of work versus the amount that’s expected after completing services. Other brand creators and business owners only care about the money they’re making without actually making sure they’re providing the quality of service as well; this includes customer service. Brand wise I’m most proud to be completing this interview because this is major! I’ve been asked to speak to high schools classes and teach classes to aspiring business owners but never been asked to be featured in a Magazine, so I’m pretty stoked.

To the readers I want you to know that you don’t have to run your business alone. It’s okay to outsource and seek help from someone who’s been in your position. I’ve built a business and even rebranded into something greater a year later, all by myself, I had no one to answer certain questions for me or mentor me in the right direction, but I was able to gain the knowledge to not only help myself but other people as well. In addition to being creative, I also offer Public Relations assistance. I’m going to be hiring soon, looking for someone to help me take on these extra tasks.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
As someone who is a major risk taker, taking risks is how you live and learn. When you’ve lived and grown through your experiences, it’s easy to connect and relate to others through those shared experiences. A risk-takers personality accepts new ideas easier than a cautious person and is ready to act upon. The biggest risk I’ve taken is moving to Dallas from Ohio in less than 30 days. I’m not one of those people that enjoy being comfortable, I’m impatient and constantly on the go and when I have tunnel vision towards a thought or idea, it has to be done with a sense of urgency. Dallas was something so new to me, I actually had never been to Texas before I just got up and moved there but it was easily one of the best decisions I could’ve made. It opened up many doors for me as an entrepreneur and networker, and I was able to be introduced to amazing like-minded individuals that continue to push me up the ladder.
