Hidden Gems: Meet Kipelyani Olesisian of Kipe Adventure

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kipelyani Olesisian.

Hi Kipelyani, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Kipelyani Olesisian , though most people know me as **Lekulek** or simply **Kipe**.

I was born and raised in Oltukai Village, a traditional Maasai community in northern Tanzania, where life has always been closely connected to nature, wildlife, and our cultural traditions. Growing up as a Maasai boy and later becoming a warrior taught me the values of resilience, responsibility, leadership, and the importance of community.

Like many young people from rural communities, my journey was not always easy. I witnessed firsthand the challenges of limited educational opportunities, lack of resources, and the struggles many families faced while trying to build a better future for their children. These experiences shaped the person I am today and inspired me to think about how I could contribute to positive change within my community.

My career in tourism began humbly as a porter on Mount Kilimanjaro. Carrying equipment up Africa’s highest mountain taught me discipline, perseverance, and the value of hard work. Over time, I became a safari guide, welcoming travellers from around the world and sharing with them the beauty of Tanzania’s wildlife, landscapes, and cultures.

Through those years, I realised that tourism could be much more than showing people amazing places. It could create opportunities, preserve culture, support conservation, and improve lives. That realisation inspired me to establish **Kipe Adventure**, a proudly Maasai-owned safari company built on the belief that travel should create meaningful connections and positive impact.

Alongside tourism, I became deeply involved in community development. One project especially close to my heart began when we started teaching children under a tree because there was no school available for them. What began as a simple effort to help local children learn has grown into a community-supported school project that continues to expand and create opportunities for the next generation. Through the **Oltukai Community Development Organization (OCDO)**, we continue to support initiatives focused on education, women’s empowerment, youth development, conservation, and community well-being.

Today, I am proud to serve not only as a tourism entrepreneur but also as a community leader working to create opportunities for others. My vision is to build a future where tourism benefits both travellers and local communities while preserving the culture, wildlife, and landscapes that make Tanzania so special.

Looking back, the journey from a young Maasai boy in Oltukai Village to the founder of Kipe Adventure has been filled with challenges, lessons, and incredible people. The most rewarding part has been seeing how travel can bring people together and create lasting impact.

My hope is that every guest who travels with us leaves not only with unforgettable memories but also with a deeper connection to Tanzania, its people, and its stories.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth road.

Like many entrepreneurs, especially those coming from rural communities, I started with very limited resources. Growing up in a Maasai village, opportunities were not always easy to find, and many of the challenges I faced were related to access to education, business knowledge, and financial resources.

When I began working in tourism as a porter on Mount Kilimanjaro, I never imagined that one day I would build my own safari company. The journey required patience, sacrifice, and a willingness to learn from every experience. There were times when I had to work extremely hard just to support myself while also trying to pursue bigger dreams for my future and my community.

One of the biggest challenges was building trust and credibility in a highly competitive tourism industry. Starting a company from the ground up without significant financial backing meant that every client mattered, and every opportunity had to be earned through hard work, honesty, and excellent service.

Another challenge was balancing business growth with community development. I have always believed that tourism should benefit local communities, but turning that vision into reality takes time, commitment, and resources. For example, our school project began with children learning under a tree because there were no classrooms available. Watching that project grow into permanent classrooms has been incredibly rewarding, but it has also required years of dedication and support from many people who believed in our mission.

Like many business owners, I have also experienced setbacks, unexpected obstacles, and moments of uncertainty. There were times when things did not go according to plan, but each challenge taught me valuable lessons about resilience, leadership, and perseverance.

Looking back, I am grateful for those struggles because they shaped who I am today. They taught me to appreciate every opportunity, stay connected to my roots, and remain focused on the bigger purpose behind Kipe Adventure.

The journey is still continuing, but every challenge has reinforced my belief that with determination, community support, and a clear vision, meaningful change is possible.

We’ve been impressed with Kipe Adventure, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Kipe Adventure is a proudly Maasai-owned safari company based in northern Tanzania, specialising in authentic safari experiences, Mount Kilimanjaro treks, cultural immersion journeys, and community-based tourism.

At its core, Kipe Adventure was founded on a simple belief: travel should be about more than visiting beautiful places. It should create meaningful connections between people, cultures, wildlife, and communities.

We offer a range of experiences across Tanzania, including wildlife safaris, Great Migration adventures, Kilimanjaro climbs, walking safaris, cultural experiences, and our signature “Beyond the Safari” journeys. These experiences are carefully designed to help travellers discover not only Tanzania’s extraordinary landscapes and wildlife but also the people and traditions that make this country unique.

What sets us apart is our deep connection to the communities and landscapes we operate in. As a Maasai-owned company, we offer a perspective that many travelers rarely have the opportunity to experience. Our guests are welcomed into our communities, share stories around campfires, meet local families, and gain insights into a way of life that has existed alongside wildlife for generations.

We are particularly known for creating experiences that blend wildlife, culture, and impact. While many travelers come to Tanzania for the animals, they often leave talking about the people they met, the friendships they formed, and the stories they shared.

One of the things we are most proud of is our commitment to giving back. Through the Oltukai Community Development Organization (OCDO), a portion of our tourism revenue supports community initiatives focused on education, women’s empowerment, youth development, conservation, and community well-being.

Perhaps the project closest to our hearts is a school that began under a tree in our community. What started as a simple effort to provide education for local children has grown into a developing school with permanent classrooms and a vision for an even brighter future. For many of our guests, visiting the school becomes one of the most meaningful moments of their journey.

Brand-wise, we are proud to be more than a safari company. We see ourselves as storytellers, cultural ambassadors, and bridge-builders between travellers and local communities. Every itinerary is designed with care, authenticity, and purpose, ensuring that each journey leaves a positive impact on both our guests and the people who welcome them.

If there is one thing we would like readers to know about Kipe Adventure, it is this:

We do not simply offer safaris.

We create experiences that connect people to wildlife, culture, community, and purpose.

Our goal is for every traveller to leave Tanzania with more than photographs. We hope they leave with new friendships, a deeper understanding of our world, and the feeling that they have become part of something meaningful.

That is the spirit of Kipe Adventure.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Absolutely. In fact, I am still looking for mentors and learning from people around me every day.

Coming from a rural Maasai community, I did not grow up with access to business networks, professional mentors, or entrepreneurial training. Much of what I have learned has come through experience, curiosity, and the relationships I have built along the way.

One of the most valuable lessons I have learned is that mentorship does not always come from formal programmes. Sometimes it comes from clients, colleagues, partners, friends, or simply people whose work and values you admire.

For me, networking has worked best when it is genuine. Rather than focusing on what someone can do for me, I try to focus on building authentic relationships. I enjoy learning about people’s experiences, sharing my own story, and finding ways we can support one another.

Working in tourism has also taught me that every conversation can open a new door. Some of the most important opportunities in my life came from relationships that started with a simple conversation, whether on Mount Kilimanjaro, during a safari, or while working on community projects.

My advice would be:

* Be open to learning from everyone.
* Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
* Build relationships before asking for favors.
* Stay connected with people who inspire you.
* Be patient—meaningful relationships take time.
* Most importantly, remain authentic and true to your values.

I believe people are often willing to help when they see genuine passion, commitment, and purpose.

As I continue growing Kipe Adventure and our community initiatives, I hope to connect with mentors who can help me become a better leader, entrepreneur, and community builder. At the same time, I hope to inspire and support young people from my own community who are beginning their own journeys.

After all, success is rarely achieved alone. It is built through relationships, shared knowledge, and the willingness to learn from others.
