Hidden Gems: Meet Marlene of NewPath Health Institute

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlene.

Hi Marlene, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey started when I moved from Cameroon to the United States at 20 years old with big dreams of becoming a doctor and one day giving back to my community. Life didn’t go as planned—I faced unexpected challenges, had to pivot, and eventually pursued nursing. That experience taught me that life doesn’t always follow a straight path, but every step has purpose.

Over the years, I continued my education, got married to my husband Joel, and we started our family. I had my first son, Tyivon, by C-section, and later we welcomed our daughter, Taliah by C-section as well.

What should have been a joyful season quickly became one of the most challenging times of my life.

When Tyivon was a little over a year old, we found out he had multiple food allergies along with eczema, breathing issues, and frequent illnesses. We were constantly in and out of doctor’s offices and emergency rooms. I remember being told, “There’s nothing you can do, you just have to learn to manage it.” As both a mother and a nurse, that was very difficult to accept.

Around that same time, I was in school and became a nurse practitioner in 2015—about three years after his health challenges began. Even with my medical training, I felt like there were still so many unanswered questions.

The medications kept increasing—steroids, inhalers, antibiotics, allergy medication, Ibuprofen and Tylenol—but nothing was truly addressing the root cause. Watching my child suffer pushed me to start asking deeper questions.

I began researching on my own and exploring natural approaches. I became an essential oil coach and started using essential oils, which opened my eyes, but also made me realize how much more there was to learn. As I continued digging deeper, I discovered the connection between gut health and chronic conditions, which led me to the GAPS diet.

As I applied these changes, I began to see real transformation—my son’s skin improved, his breathing got better, he got sick less often, and even his behavior changed. It wasn’t just him—my entire family started experiencing improvements in their health. My mother, who was living with us at the time, got off all her medications for diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol.

At the same time, I became very intentional about creating a toxin-free environment at home. I started making my own products—laundry detergent, body butter, soap bars, and essential oil blends for different needs. What started as something for my family slowly grew into something more. Over the past couple of years, I began sharing and selling my products to family and friends, and now I’m working on building an official online presence, with the goal of eventually opening a physical location.

That journey was truly the turning point for me.

I went on to study functional medicine so I could better understand root causes rather than just manage symptoms. It completely changed the way I view health and how I care for others.

Today, I help individuals and families take charge of their health by looking at the whole picture—nutrition, lifestyle, environment, and internal balance—so they can find true healing, not just temporary relief.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road.

There have been many challenges along the way—personally, professionally, and emotionally. Moving to a new country at a young age came with its own difficulties, from adjusting to a new environment to navigating school and finances while trying to stay focused on my goals.

One of the most difficult seasons was when my son started having health issues. Watching him struggle with allergies, eczema, and breathing problems, while feeling like there were no real answers, was incredibly overwhelming. As both a mother and a healthcare provider, it was hard to accept being told that we just had to manage his symptoms without understanding the root cause.

I also had to learn through trial and error. I remember using lower-quality essential oils in the beginning, thinking I was helping—but instead, it actually worsened my son’s skin. That experience taught me the importance of quality and being intentional about what we use.

Building my business has also come with significant challenges. I officially started in 2019, and shortly after, COVID hit. I had to pause everything. During that time, I went to New York to work for a few months, then returned to Texas and worked at various sites doing COVID testing.

Being separated from my family during that time took a toll on me. When I came back, I started dealing with anxiety, difficulty sleeping, exhaustion, and hormonal imbalances. I gained weight and found it difficult to fully function, both personally and in my business.

It was a very humbling season for me.

But that experience also gave me a deeper understanding of what many of my clients go through—feeling off, overwhelmed, and not like themselves.

It has taken time, but this year I have truly been able to reset, refocus, and step back into my purpose with greater clarity and strength.

Every challenge along the way has shaped who I am today and strengthened my commitment to helping others find real answers and healing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m a nurse practitioner with a doctorate, and my work is centered around helping individuals take a root-cause approach to their health through functional medicine.

I primarily work with women between the ages of 40 and 50 who are experiencing symptoms like hot flashes, headaches, weight gain, fatigue, and mood changes—symptoms that are often dismissed or normalized but are frequently connected to hormonal imbalances. Many of the women I work with don’t initially realize their hormones are at the root of what they’re experiencing, and I help them understand what’s happening in their bodies and how to support it naturally.

At the same time, I also work with children, particularly those dealing with issues like eczema, allergies, and gut-related concerns. That part of my work is very personal to me, as it stems from my own experience navigating my son’s health challenges at a young age.

As a mother of a daughter, this work is also about prevention and education. I want her to grow up with a better understanding of her body—especially when it comes to hormones and overall health—so she can be more prepared and empowered than many of us were.

What I’m known for is helping people who feel like they’ve “tried everything” but still don’t feel well. Many of my clients are told their labs are “normal,” yet they continue to struggle with symptoms. I take a deeper, more personalized approach—looking at patterns, lifestyle, nutrition, and underlying imbalances to help them find real answers.

What sets me apart is that my work is both clinical and deeply personal. My journey started with my own family, so I understand what it feels like to be searching for answers while feeling unheard. That allows me to connect with my clients in a way that goes beyond just treatment.

In addition to my clinical work, I also created a natural skincare and wellness brand, NewPath Organics. This grew out of my desire to create a toxin-free environment at home. I began making my own products—such as soap bars, body butters, and essential oil blends—and over time, it has evolved into something I could share with others.

What I’m most proud of is that everything I offer—both my services and my products—comes from lived experience, intention, and a genuine desire to help others feel better.

I want people to know that what they’re experiencing is not “just part of getting older.” There are answers, and with the right approach, it’s possible to feel better and truly support your body.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
One of the most important qualities that has contributed to my success is resilience.

There have been many moments in my journey where things didn’t go as planned—whether it was navigating my own path in a new country, facing my son’s health challenges, or even having to pause my business during COVID and rebuild again.

But through all of that, I never stopped seeking answers.

I think another important characteristic is curiosity—the willingness to question things and look deeper, especially when something doesn’t feel right. That mindset is what led me to explore root-cause healing and ultimately shaped the way I practice today.

Those experiences taught me to stay patient, keep learning, and trust the process, even when the path isn’t clear.
