Hidden Gems: Meet Monica Lopez of Diamond Body Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Lopez.

Monica Lopez

Monica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my health journey in high school playing sports suffering intense back pain brought on from a birth issue. I wanted to learn how I could take better care of my spine for my future and live with less intense chronic pain, especially after many doctors telling me I would be in a wheelchair by 50. I write this article now at almost 65 years young and feeling great yet living with a lot less chronic pain.

Once I started to learn anatomy, kinesiology, physiology, I thought if I could help make my life healthier and spine live with less pain, I could help others live healthier as well.

I started off as a group exercise teacher then quickly got into personal training with multiple certifications along with a Bachelors in Health Care Admin. with emphasis on Long Term Health and a Minor in Phycology which helps me better understand my clients.

As I became healthier and able to care for my spine I got into bodybuilding and competed for years winning and now judging the shows and training athletes to do competitions. My category of choice was, “figure” and I proudly always competed natural without the use of steroids and encourage my athletes to do the same.

Health & fitness became a true lifestyle. I must add that my father a Colonel in the Marine Corp. always pushed myself and two brothers into sports, so we were all very athletic.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing is smooth in life, injuries along the way for all athletes can slow one down and complicate it. If you are always positive about what you are going through and keep pushing the mind along with the body all is achievable.

I suffered two hernias, one from birth as a child the other from my second pregnancy along with rectus diastasis. I also now have hereditary arthritis in both knees but keep pushing strong and encouraging others aging is a natural process and keep moving because the alternative is far worse.

I look for all natural remedies for all health related issues teaching my clients to do all they can to stay healthy then if all fails and nothing works to go western medicine. Bridging Eastern and Western health to me is so important to incorporate.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I have owned Diamond Body Fitness LLC for over 46 years and have many options for my programs within my business. I have trained professional athletes from NFL, Hockey, Ice skating, Baseball, Bodybuilding to amateur Athletes, Oceanside Police Dept., Marines to regular moms and dads.

I currently teach P.E. classes at my local college in town. I also currently teach Pilates Reformer classes, small private group classes, posing & contest prep for bodybuilding shows, private one-on-one personal training, and online personal training nationally and abroad. I also do all nutrition for my clients, cardio and all complete components of teaching for a three month program for all clients.

I teach a triangle of health to get to their goals, proper nutrition, all macros spelled out in grams and calories a day. How much cardio for that particular body. Weight training, how many sets, reps, rest, weight and what machines and change them along the way to adjust as their body adjusts. All done for a comprehensive three month program of learning.

What sets me apart from other trainers is I have been in the business for over 46 years so I have experience along with a broad spectrum of education, that combination is an asset for a client when hiring my company. I am always current on certifications and I adapt to all clients specific customized goals. I truly believe education and consistently staying current in the health curriculum is valuable to my clients.

I am proud to still be involved in bodybuilding shows and enjoy molding a competitor for a show as well as judging for a show.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I believe in great mentorship. Find a real professional in your genera, one with years of experience and much current education.

When I did my first bodybuilding show I hired two professional trainers to assist me. The first one having not too much experience with shows, I began to lose too much muscle for stage. I immediately hired another trainer who actually was on the Olympia stage three times, a great mentor to learn from.
