Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Purcell.
Hi Nikki, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My husband Brian was a full time firefighter when we started the company in 1998, I was pregnant with our first son and we both did not want to have to put our child in daycare, So being a firefighter and already doing side jobs on his days off he came up with moving as he had customers asking about moving stuff. We started the company in our home and Brian would work at the fire station for 24 hour shifts and get off then move for most of the day. I answered the phones at home and booked jobs. We did this in our home for about 20 years, Once I got pregnant with our youngest son it was little more difficult to answer phones and book moves and Take care of two boys under the age of 5. My sister had been telling me I needed to hire help and she actually found our first actual office employee for us as she was at a Starbucks and the girl was applying for a job 🙂 We continued to run it from our home as I stated for the next several years and at one point had four girls in our home answering phones. We then moved to our current location/warehouse in Lewisville in 2018 and since have offered storage and portable storage options. Brian retired from the Lewisville FD in 2015 so that we could spend more time with our sons while they were still in school. Firehose Movers started with Brian, his brother and a few guys from the fire dept and a open flatbed trailer, to now having 22 fully enclosed 34′ gooseneck trailers, two warehouses for storage, portable storage and about 60 plus employees aong with our franchise status.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The struggles are definitely balancing family while owning a business together and not always agreeing on things when it comes to the company. Now that hes been retired we are together 24/7 and that can definitely take a toll when you work and live together. We have made it great for 27 years of marriage though 🙂
