Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Curtis.
Hi Robert, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started for me as a child; both of my parents liked to give whatever they had to people in need, even through their trial and tribulation. As a result of domestic violence, at one point me, and my mom lived in a shelter when I was a child; we went to this place called Genesis Shelter, they welcomed us with open arms; this was the first time I saw my momma cry, this begin the process of wanting to make a change in the world. My most humbling experiences comes from my father; he was a man of god struggling with a crack addiction. Even as he was struggling with crack addiction, he still would find time to help with the homeless. I would go with him and work at the homeless shelter feeding the homeless people; we also would study the bible and worship God all night long!!! I had to remember at least three scriptures in the bible every weekend it was like being in a bible boot camp. Even though my father was going through his struggle he was still raising me to be a solid man of God!!! I began working at a young age even before I was at the age where I could get a job, this experience kept me grounded and outta trouble. While working as a teen, I met my wife; her parents raised her to be a woman of God as well; it was love at first sight. Her dad was a reverend, and her momma was a missionary; we became teen parents, and we began our journey as a young married couple no matter what trials are tribulations we went through, with God’s help, we managed to keep our family together and raise 6 children. Her mom played a major part in both of our lives. All three of us would get together and provide food for people who needed it, and we would distribute it throughout the churches my mother-in-law owned; this became a tradition, and from the start it’s been our passion to do something meaningful to be different. After my mother-in-law passed in 2020, me and my wife formed a nonprofit, and we named it after her mother The Betty Walker Waites Foundation. So from then on, the Betty Walker Waites Foundation has been making an impact in the Dallas community since 2020, with the help of our partners like the City of Dallas, Feed The Children, Toys For Tots, Kroger’s, Budget, Volunteer Now, and more we have been able to provide to the homeless and low income in Dallas with free essentials such as, prescription glasses, toys, laundry detergent, juices, socks, and school supplies. I’m very passionate about the work that I do. I hope that my story one day can inspire someone to be the change in this cold world. Always believe in yourself and always be willing to inspire others!!!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been some challenges, as there is with anything in life. But with God, anything is possible; gotta have faith first and believe in yourself. Don’t give up!!!
