Hidden Gems: Meet Sara Terry of Sara Terry Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Terry.

Sara Terry

Hi Sara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My photography journey began in 2017 while I was living in England — but it really started even earlier, through a personal transformation. Before becoming a photographer, I was a wife and a mother to a one-year-old baby girl. When we moved from Utah to the UK, it was a big transition for me. Life in England was very different from what I was used to in the U.S., and I struggled to adapt. I felt a deep sense of loneliness and disconnection in a foreign place.

What changed everything was the support of my father-in-law, William Terry, a professional photographer based in San Antonio. He saw how much I loved taking photos of my daughter and encouraged me to pursue that passion. He signed me up for my first online photography course — and that was the beginning of my journey into the world of photography.

I started learning through online courses and workshops, slowly building my skills with passion and curiosity. What began as a creative outlet quickly turned into something much deeper.

When I moved to Austin, Texas, I officially launched my career as a professional photographer. Over the next three years, I built my business photographing weddings and portraits, becoming known for my dreamy style and attention to detail.
Photography is more than just a job for me it’s my way of expressing myself, preserving memories, and connecting with people through art.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth. As a self-taught photographer starting in a new country, I faced a lot of challenges building my portfolio and client base from scratch. In the beginning, I had to rely on online learning, trial and error, and offering free sessions just to gain experience and build trust. Balancing my passion for photography with being a mom and managing a household wasn’t always easy either. There were moments of doubt, especially when relocating from Austin to Dallas and having to rebuild my network and reputation all over again.
Marketing myself in a competitive industry, dealing with slow seasons, and investing in gear and tools without guaranteed income were also part of the struggle. But every challenge taught me resilience and pushed me to become more resourceful and confident in my craft.
What truly helped me stay grounded through it all was the incredible support of my husband and father-in-law. They’ve been my biggest cheerleaders from the very beginning. Their belief in me — especially during moments of uncertainty — gave me the strength to keep going, keep learning, and keep creating.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
