Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Sigurdson.
Hi Cristina, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up, I always organized my toys, my mom’s sock drawer, the kitchen, you name it, I organized it. This trend continued during my time at the University of Houston, where I would insist on putting my roommates’ rooms in order. After earning a degree in marketing and graduating from the leading sales program in the country, I put my organizational skills to use while pursuing a career in sales.
At my first sales job, I realized how advantageous having organizing skills would be in the pursuit of business success. I moved on to work for an insurance company, where I discovered my love for helping people better understand a confusing but very important component of life. Then I honed my organizing skills on a large scale when I moved to the industrial supply industry. For five years, I helped manufacturing companies implement inventory management systems and increase operational efficiency. Seeing the positive effects that streamlined organization made in the daily operations of these large companies inspired me to apply these skills to small business and home organization. Additionally, having the opportunity to foster personal growth in others through the use of time management techniques motivated me to start my business. From that winding journey, Clean, Chic & Centered was born.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
After spending time working under a wonderful mentor in the organizing industry, I decided to pursue Clean, Chic & Centered full-time in January 2020. In February 2020, I tore my ACL, had surgery in March, and Dallas closed down due to the pandemic within a week. The task of building a business through this adversity has taught me resilience and ingenuity. The uncertainty has taught me hope and perseverance. Through it all, the strength of my organizing tools and my positive message of reclaiming desires has carried my clients and me to live a life of our own creation.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Clean, Chic & Centered Professional Organizers was born out of a deep desire to help others coupled with an aptitude for organizing. The philosophy upon which Clean, Chic & Centered was founded is: nothing is past the point of repair. Often times we convince ourselves what we desire is lost to us. I adamantly believe that we can not only reclaim those desires but realize them in our own lives. Organization is not a “one size fits all” solution. My goal is to help people let go of comparison and create their distinctive organized life. During our process, we teach our clients the skills they need to maintain organization in their life far past our time together. When a client calls to say they were able to tackle an organizing project on their own using the skills I taught them, it makes my heart so proud! I have a variety of options and packages to fit every budget and project size. The challenges of the pandemic have inspired innovation within the industry, and now I offer my services virtually to serve those outside the Dallas area!
Can you talk about how you think about risk?
I heard a piece of advice given by the father of Mark and Jay Duplass to his two sons recently and I think it’s probably the best risk advice I’ve ever heard. It was this, “You’ll never know more than you do right now.” When I heard that, I thought it was brilliant. So many times we are hesitant to take a risk because we don’t have all the information. I think we tend to want to know the outcome before being willing to be vulnerable or to take any risk, but that’s not how the risk-benefit relationship works. This way of thinking can keep people in dissatisfactory situations at best and in dangerous ones at worst. You have to be willing to step into the space of “unknown” to reap the benefits found there. That being said, risk and I are tentative friends. As a business owner, I have to be willing to take risks, otherwise, I likely wouldn’t own a business. However, I do measure those risks to whatever extent possible without allowing the “unknown” to impede growth.
