Inspiring Conversations with Hiro of Hirostic Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hiro.

Hi Hiro, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I had a friend in college who used to suffer from regular headaches. One time she asked me to massage her neck & upper back. To my surprise, her headache was gone after a few minutes. From then on, I massaged her neck & upper back whenever she had a headache with the same result. Though I didn’t understand what I was doing and why it was effective, I got interested in massage therapy. Little did I know at that time that massage therapy would have such far-reaching effects on the body.
I’m now in my seventh year as a licensed massage therapist. I have a holistic approach to manual therapy, taking into consideration how the different dimensions of our being are interconnected and can impact our health. On this journey, I’ve had the privilege of seeing clients find lasting relief of symptoms without the use of medicine. One of my best memories is of a client who avoided surgery after a couple of massage sessions with me. I have now expanded my understanding of the muscular system to be part in the larger neuro-muscular-skeletal system. I’ve moved beyond the idea of just relaxing muscles on a fixed skeletal frame. Instead I have experienced that releasing overused shortened muscles can actually release skeletal contortions and restricted joint movements, which ultimately cause pain. By freeing muscular restrictions, joints move more freely and efficiently. When this happens, even the nervous system, which is so interconnected with the musculoskeletal system, is positively influenced with less interference and greater normal functioning.
How grateful I am that what seemed to be simple releasing of muscle tension for my college friend with headaches, would lead to the deeper understanding of just how many positive health restoring effects massage therapy has on the body.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, I used to rent out my mentor’s space. I had some challenges trying to find available slots to schedule my clients. This eventually led me to find my own studio. Building a client base is also a slow process. In this industry clients come in waves but if you’re patient & consistent with what you provide, you’ll start getting regular clients.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Hirostic Wellness?
I’m a manual therapist specializing in orthopedic / medical massage.

I’m mostly know for headache & migraine relief, muscle pain relief & improved mobility.

I’m most grateful for helping clients get relief in a holistic way without the use of medicine. One of my best memories is of a client who avoided surgery after a couple of massage sessions with me.

I believe one of the things that sets me apart is my approach to therapy. I view my work as a partnership with my clients. By educating my clients, they get more empowered through raised awareness of their bodies & how different things such as good posture, exercise, rest & diet can drastically improve their overall health. When empowered clients find relief, they have a greater appreciation & take ownership to maintain their new found health benefits.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I believe everything in life is a risk because no one can really tell the future. For example, when we walk into a building, we don’t think much about whether the structure could collapse. We just make the assumption that we’ll be safe. The degree & object of our faith determines how much risk we can take.

My approach is to assess the consequence of a choice before I make it. For example, starting a business from scratch was a significant risk. One of the potential consequence involves generating an income. You have to think about the capital to get the equipment, & how to find clients among other things. These concerns are hardly present for employees who receive a monthly salary. On the flip side, one of the beauty of having a business is that you’re not at the mercy of anyone. Job security really doesn’t exist because every employee is disposable. For example, if an employee can no longer work, he or she will be replaced & life goes on.

Having the privilege to assist clients find lasting relief without medication is worth the risk. It is quite fulfilling & I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Because this is what I was born to do & I love the work I do, I never get bored or tired of it.

I recognize my privilege of discovering my purpose, being passionate about it, & earning a living from it. This makes the risk of running this business worthwhile & the rewards far exceed the monetary value.
