Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Monsivais.
Hi Jessica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Over the years, I have worked to become a passionate and conscientious leader in the marketing and community outreach sectors. Eager to express my creativity in all my endeavors and striving to always give back to the community I was born and raised in, here in Dallas, TX.
In my personal life, I wanted to refocus my fitness journey by turning towards more accessible workouts. Something that has become increasingly difficult to do with mounting prices and a commodified fitness industry that made me shift back to basics. In my search, I found running clubs and immediately loved the concept of bringing people together out in nature. Being more of a walker myself, I wanted to join a space exclusively for women that allowed us to feel that we had safety in numbers and an opportunity for connections as we went out for strolls. After failing to find any local, active walking groups, I decided to fill that gap myself. City Girls Walk Dallas was then formed and had our first walk in May 2024.
I found inspiration from walking groups across the US (our name was influenced by NYC’s City Girls Who Walk) and have now connected with them, sharing advice and experiences between us all.
We’ve now been active for over two years, and have had so much growth. That’s all been thanks to word of mouth and the power of social media. As mentioned, my current profession and educational background is in marketing, and I have worked in the field for over eight years. Leveraging the skills and knowledge I have gained over the years has been incredibly helpful.
As a first-generation Latina, my experiences have shaped my perspectives and the way that I approach the world. All thanks to my intersectional identities as first-generation, Latina and a woman. As part of my journey, I have been lucky enough to have worked for and alongside strong women. They all taught me and showed me that no matter the number of barriers and glass ceilings imposed on us, we could break through them all. I once wished to “combine my passions of marketing and community engagement” into something more. This has been my something more.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Handling burnout has been a challenge that I’ve had to navigate. I want to do it all and have everything executed perfectly for our members. But that’s just not possible, and quite frankly, not healthy.
I have had to step back and give myself the time I needed to rest and come back with more energy. I grew my leadership team and am learning to better delegate. I truly couldn’t do this without them.
As a woman, it’s hard to ask for help. But I remind myself that City Girls Walk Dallas is just as much our members’ as it is mine. And I’m grateful that they want to help and be engaged.
This is something I work on every day, with CGWD and my professional life. I just remind myself that the communities we have built are there for a reason.
As you know, we’re big fans of City Girls Walk Dallas. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Our mission at City Girls Walk Dallas is to create a wellness community built to bring women together through movement, connection, and culture. We host three to four events a month, ranging from walks, fitness classes, and socials. We welcome women of all ages and backgrounds, as well as anyone who identifies as non-binary and/or genderqueer. Our walks are always free to attend, and all you have to do is show up!
I am most proud of how many women return time and time again to our walks. It has been a beautiful thing to see them come alone and build friendships as they return.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I want City Girls Walk Dallas to be synonymous with a safe and empowering space for women. I have already gotten to see friendships form from this group and I can only hope to continue to see that.
