Today we’d like to introduce you to Macey Hardin.
Macey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in a town called Seymour, which has about 2500 people and no other towns for about a 50-mile radius. I worked for my parent’s business at their local metal sales and hardware store starting at the age of 13. I remember being very insistent on being set up in their payroll system so I could get a payroll check every other week with taxes taken to where I felt responsible and older (my mom begged me to take cash under the table- why didn’t I listen!?). I was taught financing, bookkeeping, customer service, human resources and other valuable assets in which I add to my business today. My mom and I would “butt heads” quite often due to our similar personalities and therefore, she ultimately fired me at age 16.
Considering the small amount of employment options, I went to the local Sonic and got hired on as a cart girl and waitress. That alone taught me more customer service skills than I ever want to learn again. By far one of the hardest jobs I have ever done. The level of multitasking that comes with happy hour is no joke-ha! I worked at Sonic from summer prior to senior of high school year through summer after senior year and then left for college at Texas Tech. While in college, I worked as a waitress at Texas Roadhouse, Receptionist at Doctors office specializing in family medicine and last, but not least, gathered garage sale furniture and rehabbed it by sanding down and refinishing it. I graduated within 4 hours with honors with a Bachelors’s in Speech and Hearing Sciences to become a Speech therapist. I moved back home and worked as a school-based speech therapist for Munday ISD (2 years) & Wichita Falls ISD (2 years).
After not getting accepted into the master’s program to further my speech therapy degree, I decided to get my real estate license to help start a foundation for what I dreamed to be an interior design business. I felt the only way to gain potential clients would be to assist in finding a home that needed renovating and after helping them with the purchase as a realtor, I would then hopefully be hired on to design their renovation. We were living in Wichita Falls, TX at the time and my husband (boyfriend at the time) also wanted to further his career so he took a job in Dallas, and we relocated. I got my real estate license summer of 2018 and realized very quickly this was not an easy job, that clients do not come knocking on your door every day to buy/sell a home. I had quit my speech therapy job in Wichita Falls to move to Dallas and was unable to get another speech therapy assistant job; therefore I was somewhat pushed into real estate full time. Which ended up being the greatest blessing because I am sure I would not have had the courage to do so if I were left with a choice. I had my RE license eight whole months before anyone would even have a conversation with me about buying, selling or even leasing!
Also, during this time struggled to kick start my design business. However, I had one friend who I met while working as a speech therapist reach out to help select furniture for her new lake home. I made zero money on this job, actually lost money, but one thing I did was blast my social media with pictures of the entire process. Whether it was going to the store to purchase, driving to the lake, setting up the furniture, etc. I saw that I gained interest with my inner circle of followers. It would be several months later before I had any leads for design again.
All during this time of trying to start a real estate and interior design business, I was planning a wedding without an income. I felt I needed to do something during my downtime while I was not that busy, so I constantly went to real estate classes put on by title companies to enhance my knowledge about the industry. I met great mentors and friends that really molded me into who I am today. I was able to call those people for information and assistance (and still do today). They are also the very people that not only help me with real estate but send interior design clients to me as well. It was summer of 2019, a whole year with my real estate license and starting my business of RE & Interior Design, that I started to see some success. I had sold four homes and two new interior design clients that I was working with. I continued to still listen to business podcasts, speak to other business owners, attend real estate courses, follow other interior designers to still push myself to be as knowledgeable as possible in whatever it is I am doing. I finished year 2020 with 46 homes sold and 16 major interior design jobs and it’s looking like 2021 is going to be even better. One thing I can say for myself is I work stay driven, humbled, motivated and just being the best person I can possibly be to my family, friends and clients.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about RESID Studios?
I offer a full-service real estate and interior design firm. With real estate, I can help buy, sell or locate a lease (apartment or home) and with interior design, I can assist with small jobs in furnishing a small space or a full-blown new home build with all design details to finishing with the furnishings and decorating.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is being successful and seeing my parents and husband so proud. I see so much of both my parents and husband in who I am today. They have all three shaped me into being a good person, humble, hard-working and business-minded.
