Hi Marquiet, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was 14 years old when I made my first profit from doing hair. What started out as a hobby and a hustle evolved into a very successful career. Upon entering college (Prairie View A&M University) I had no intentions on becoming a hairstylist. In fact, I tried to hide my talents because I was feeling burned out. That was very short-lived as word travels fast at an HBCU full of women in need of hair care.
In my earlier years as a hairstylist, it was easy to fall into what was trending at the time; whether it was the styles, the methods, or the products marketed to professionals. As I evolved, so did my technique and education. I began to focus more on healthy hair care.
While providing services to my clients, I evaluated how their hair responded to certain products. Some products left their hair too dry or too heavy. Other products contained toxic ingredients like sulfates and parabens which are linked to cancer and can affect estrogen levels.
I wanted to formulate a product for my clients that I could trust the ingredients were safe and beneficial. I began to test formulas on my client’s hair and asked for honest feedback. Together, we found our solution. This is how Desert Flower was born.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Like any human, building a business, I’ve faced obstacles. However, I did a lot of heavy research so it’s been a pretty smooth road. My biggest struggle was coming up with a name for my products. I wanted a name that represented the community it serviced. One that symbolizes the complexity of natural hair. After a lot of unfulfilling choices, I decided on Desert Flower- The ultimate survivor.
We’ve been impressed with Desert Flower Luxury Hair Care, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’ve been in the beauty industry for 20 years. Unlike most products on the market, Desert Flower was curated from professional, hands-on, experience.
