Today we’d like to introduce you to Matice Morris.
Hi Matice, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Standing 5 feet, 11 inches tall (commanding 6+ feet in heels), I understand the nuances that affect tall women in fashion. Growing up, I was taller than my school-age peers, and wore store-bought jeans that never quite reached past my ankles. I also had a stutter, so one can imagine the awkwardness that youth brought.
When I was 14 years old, I started designing the clothing of my dreams. I’d sketch, repurpose old-clothes, and play in my mom’s closet. Fashion was my form of expression when talking was hindered by disfluency. I desired tops with a sleeve that passed my wrist, dresses that swept the floor, and bold style solutions that spoke for me.
Twenty-plus years later, after building the social brand StutterBae® that focused on educating and encouraging others who stutter, my design dreams and desires became reality with the creation of my namesake womenswear brand, Matice Ahnjamine.
I can show people better than I can tell them. I want to show how far someone can go with a stutter.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The work has been mighty, but the load has been light. Since the beginning (I officially started June 28, 2025), each step of the process has been in alignment. Everything has fallen into place in such a way that I know this is my purpose. It has not come without hard work, discipline, and dedication to the journey. I’ve had things go wrong, hiccups with manufacturers, delayed shipments, models backing, but I’ve learned to become the queen of the pivot. And everything turns out for the good of the brand in the end. Even with that, I know I’m on the right path so the journey has been enjoyable.
I also work a 9-5 corporate job so it has been a balancing act with that, dealing with high-quality manufacturers in China, and skilled consultants in Australia and Brazil. All while trying to balance daily workouts and have a social life. But it’s all worth it.
As you know, we’re big fans of Matice Ahnjamine. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Matice Ahnjamine caters to tall woman. Full stop. The inseams, sleeve and torso lengths, proportions… Everything is designed with the tall woman in mind. Then we go even further and focus on giving tall women quality, consistent, and elevated options. When I search tall brands, it seems that there is an abundance of activewear and loungewear. My goal is to bring tall women elevated clothing for daily wear, and then also occasionwear that makes a statement.
Even though our clothing is for tall women, we’ve found that women of average height and shorter (5’8″ and under) are interested in our pieces. At Matice Ahnjamine we say, “Built for Tall. Worn by All.” We invite all women to invest because style is not one size fits all. A skilled tailor is your secret weapon. Our garments are intentionally crafted with extra length, giving you the freedom to refine the fit to your exact proportions.
As a Founder of a woman-owned, Black-owned, and niche brand, I’m most proud that this brand even exists. Then to know the story behind the Founder (me) and how it took years to even be able to get a job that would ultimately fund my future endeavors because of my stutter… I’m most proud of the ability to feel the fear, build anyway, and let the fruit speak.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a very stubborn and ambitious child. Once my mind was made up about something, there wasn’t much changing it. And I was entrepreneurial even at a young age. My brother and I had lemonade stands, we mowed lawns and shoveled driveways, and we held garage sales.
I’ve grown as I’ve gotten older but those traits have stayed with me. Now I always say, “There are multiple ways to get to 10. 1+9, 5+5, so on and so forth.” Meaning, the end goal doesn’t change, but how we get there can be flexible.
I was also a very quiet child due to my stutter. A lot stayed in my mind and creativity was my outlet. My mom bought me a trumpet, my dad bought me a keyboard and had me in tap dance. So this path that I’ve taken with the brand was always destined for me. It was a matter of “when”, not “if”.
