Today we’d like to introduce you to Deja Hall.
Deja, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My singing experience began as a member of the First Baptist Academy school chorus in San Antonio, Texas. My enthusiasm for singing bloomed in 2007 when I was asked to lead a song during a church service in Okinawa, Japan. I was so inspired by the experience that I began singing on a recurring basis. I received formal training in classical music from middle school through my senior year of high school.
I enjoy performing in front of an audience. I’ve entertained tourists at the Arneson River Theater on the famous San Antonio, Texas “River Walk” during the 2010 and 2012 Christmas holiday. I’ve also participated in San Antonio’s Time Warner “Our Part of Town” televised talent competition, winning first place in my district in 2011 and 2012. I continued to improve my vocal skills and developed my craft with the help of my vocal coaches at Best of Both Worlds Vocal Productions in San Antonio, Texas.
In 2014, I competed in a television entertainment reality series, The Voice. I finished my appearance on the show landing as one of the top 20 finalists and had the privilege of singing a final televised song with the top 5 of Team Shakira during the finale.
After the show, I continued pursuing my music career. I began working with a team, vocal instructor and producer to create music. Three songs which I’ve released within the past couple of years. “Victorious”, “When It Rains”, and “Seasons”. I also continued performing here and there around the San Antonio and Austin area. One performance being the National Anthem at a Spurs playoff game. I placed my music career on hold during my senior year of college in order to focus on graduating. I recently graduated this past December, and I’m ready to get back in the swing of things.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road is definitely not easy. There are many obstacles that I had and still have to overcome. I’ve battled issues with confidence, working with the wrong individuals, people telling what to change about my music and how I sound. Despite all of that though, I have such an amazing support system of friends and family who support 100% of what I do. I also know that God gave me this gift for a reason, and with that I need to use it. The advice I would give other women is to do you. Be true to who you are as a person/ artist. Thats what makes you unique. If its something that you love to do, strive to achieve it and don’t give up. Even when times are tough, know that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel and that you are great enough to get there.
Please tell us about your music.
I’m known for being an R&B/ Neo-Soul recording artist. I believe what sets me apart from others is my tone (vocal tone). Im also big on inspirational music, which are the type of songs I usually record/ release.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I have a few vocal warm-up apps on my phone that I love to play around with here and there. They are great ways to get some type of singing in during the day.
