Life and Work with LaDonya Simmons

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaDonya Simmons.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love for the beauty industry started for me when I was a little girl. I was so fascinated with the elegance and style that I would pick through my grandmothers Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale’s magazines and decide how I wanted to look when I was an adult.

That was the start of me wanting to make people look and feel beautiful. The idea for a cosmetic line came in 2018 as I was laying across my bed, on Instagram looking for a makeup look I could recreate. I then had an idea to make lipstick. So, I looked at all the ingredients, watched a YouTube video and at that moment, a voice spoke to me and said, create your own line. I thought, God if this is you, I need a name. I sat up in my bed and I spoke out: It’s ART Cosmetics. Since then, I have been going non stop at building my brand.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth ride. There have been times where I thought about not ever doing makeup because I doubted my talent. I wanted to give up many times because I didn’t see any progress, nor did I have the money to invest in my business.

I believe if you have a passion for something and God has given you that desire. Believe that everything will fall into place in its right time. Don’t give up on your dreams and do something every day that will get you closer to that dream. Make yourself a weekly goal list and check things off as you go. Be inventive in ways of making money to put back in your business.

Right now, I’m a Benefits Verification Specialist with a pharmaceutical company here in Dallas. This year, I will be partnering with the BBBS Organization, to become a Big Sister. I am super excited about that!

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
The most important advice I could give to another young woman starting her career is, do not become distracted. Focus on your goals and what you want in life. Do not let anyone else insecurities or their dream for your life hold you back. Do what is best for you. Also, make sure you have positive and wise people around you that you can talk with. People who are honest and loving and keep you on track.
