Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy K.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I always knew I’d have a career in fashion. As a kid, I’d make outfits for my Barbies; later on, I’d coordinate outfits for my mother and sisters, and spend hours poring over the latest issues of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. Armed with a degree in Merchandising and Fashion Promotion, I went on to work for the crème de la crème of retailers: Neiman Marcus, Barneys New York and Saks Fifth Avenue. Yet the ultimate goal was to start my own business, working one-on-one with clients as a personal shopper and stylist.
Nancy K Buy Request represents the first step in my journey; since opening in 2004, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a myriad of clients, from business executives to stay-at-home moms. All share one thing in common: the desire to elevate their style and enhance their confidence by dressing well. Next up? The Getaway Girls, a culmination of a life-long dream to share my passions—fashion, shopping and travel—with like-minded women. After hosting a trip to Florence, Italy with six amazing women, I was hooked. I truly believe coordinating personal shopping experiences in the world’s most stylish cities is my destiny. This coming June, the Getaway Girls will be off to Paris for a one-of-a-kind, six-day retail rendezvous.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Coco Chanel said, “Fashion changes, but style endures.” I think that sums up the biggest challenge of a personal shopper/stylist: knowing how to keep clients up-to-date with looks that align with their taste, budget and lifestyle. Just because something’s on-trend, doesn’t mean everyone should wear it.
I also think that it’s important for me to help clients step out of their comfort zone. If they’re afraid of brights, maybe it’s adding a pop color shoe or scarf; if they’re ultra-conservative, to loosen it up with a modern classic. Achieving that balance can be tricky, but it makes such an incredible difference.
Please tell us about Nancy K Buy Request.
I’m fortunate to stay extremely busy. Day-to-day, I might be out shopping for a specific client, creating a look book of outfits for her to refer to, organizing a closet or planning our next Getaway Girls itinerary. The good news is, because I truly love what I do, it never seems like work.
I think I’m known for helping both men and women pull together a wardrobe that fits the framework of their life—personally and professionally. I also have a knack for getting people to step out of their comfort zone and try something they never would have imagined. One of my greatest pleasures is seeing them expand the parameters of their wardrobe. Unlike many personal shoppers, I sponsor shopping and styling events at my favorite stores that bring old and new clients together for tips, trends and always, a lot of fun.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
I think the best advice I can give those entering the business is to learn from a professional. My internship program was created to help aspiring shopper/stylists pursue their dream job, to develop retail contacts, learn the ropes, grow confidence, build clientele and ultimately, start a business.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources that help you do your best in life (at work or otherwise)?
Being single, I’m a huge fan of dating coach YouTube videos and podcasts—you learn a lot of good advice about life, not just dating. (Plus, it makes the time go by faster when I’m on the elliptical.) As for apps, Bumble, of course; I’m also learning to speak French on Duolingo. (My goal is to be conversational by the time I go to Paris for the 2020 Getaway Girls trip.) On Instagram, I enjoy following @manrepeller—the writing is really good, and I find its take on fashion interesting and challenging.
