Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Lam.
Annie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m Annie Lam, the artist and entrepreneur behind Annie’s Acrylics.
I grew up surrounded by the beauty industry through the women in my family, so salons always felt familiar to me. Before pursuing nails full-time, I spent nearly ten years in the dental field as an EFDA, specializing in restorative and cosmetic work. That experience shaped my attention to detail, structure, and client care, which naturally carried over into my approach as a nail artist.
When I first entered the nail industry, I noticed how often artists and clients felt pressured to fit into certain expectations, trends, or “standards” rather than embracing individuality and creativity. Over time, I realized I didn’t want to build a brand based on conformity. I wanted to create a space where artistry, self-expression, and genuine connection mattered just as much as the final service itself.
That’s how Annie’s Acrylics was born.
What started as a creative outlet evolved into a brand centered around luxury nail artistry, modern freestyle design, education, and building meaningful relationships with the people I work with. My favorite part of this career has always been the human connection behind it all. Beyond the nails, it’s about creating an experience where people feel seen, inspired, and confident enough to express themselves unapologetically.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but I think that’s what shaped both me and the brand into what it is today.
One of the biggest challenges was learning how to believe in myself as an artist while navigating an industry that can sometimes pressure creatives to conform. Early on, I found myself questioning my style, my ideas, and whether I needed to fit into certain trends or expectations to be accepted. Over time, I realized that constantly trying to blend in was limiting my growth creatively and professionally.
Another major obstacle came when Annie’s Acrylics invested into expanding into a shared studio space. It was an exciting step that involved renovations, planning, branding, and building a creative environment for both clients and other artists. Shortly after officially launching the space, unexpected building code issues forced the business to vacate almost immediately. Financially and emotionally, it was one of the most difficult moments I’ve experienced as an entrepreneur because so much time, energy, and investment had gone into building that vision.
At the time, it would have been easy to walk away from everything. Instead, that experience reminded me that the true value of Annie’s Acrylics was never tied to a building or location. The artistry, relationships, and passion behind the brand came from me as the artist and entrepreneur. That situation forced me to become more resilient, adaptable, and confident in my ability to rebuild.
Since then, I’ve continued evolving the brand through travel, education, content creation, and connecting with new communities. Every challenge has pushed me to become more intentional about the experience and environment I want Annie’s Acrylics to represent.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a nail artist, educator, and creative entrepreneur specializing in luxury freestyle nail artistry, extreme shaping, and modern editorial-inspired designs. My work blends structure, precision, and self-expression through detailed acrylic and Gel-X enhancements that are designed to feel both artistic and wearable.
A large part of my background comes from the dental field, where I spent nearly ten years specializing in restorative and cosmetic work. That experience trained my eye for symmetry, structure, detail, and functionality, which naturally influences the way I approach nails today. I’ve always believed nail enhancements should not only look beautiful, but also feel balanced, intentional, and well-crafted.
Over the years, Annie’s Acrylics has evolved beyond just servicing clients. It has grown into a creative platform centered around artistry, education, and community. I’m known for creating bold freestyle sets, alternative luxury aesthetics, and pushing creativity outside of traditional beauty standards while still maintaining clean structure and technique.
What I’m most proud of is building a brand that feels authentic to who I am as both an artist and a person. I’ve learned that people connect most when you stop trying to fit into expectations and allow your individuality to lead your work. Through Annie’s Acrylics, I’ve been able to create meaningful relationships with clients, collaborate with brands, travel for opportunities, and now step into education to help inspire upcoming artists to trust their own creativity as well.
What sets me apart is the experience and intention behind my work. I don’t view nails as just a beauty service or trend-driven industry. For me, it’s an art form and a way to connect with people. Every set is an opportunity to create something personal, expressive, and memorable while also creating an environment where clients and students feel seen, respected, and creatively empowered.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I believe the nail industry is shifting from traditional salon culture into a more artist-driven and education-focused space. Social media has allowed nail artists to build careers through creativity, branding, and individuality rather than simply fitting into fast-paced salon environments. As an Asian woman, I have a deep respect for the immigrant salon culture that built the foundation of this industry, but I’m also proud to see a new generation redefining what success looks like. Clients today value artistry, connection, and experience just as much as the service itself. Over the next 5 to 10 years, I think artists who invest into education, technique, content creation, and personal branding will continue to elevate the industry and gain more recognition as true creatives and entrepreneurs.
