Life & Work with Chiquita Thomas of Dallas-Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chiquita Thomas.

Hi Chiquita, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story started in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I’ve always had a natural passion for hair, whether it was doing my own, my daughter’s, or making sure friends and family looked their best for any occasion. What started as something small quickly became something people depended on.

In my early twenties, I had my first experience working at my sister’s salon. That opportunity showed me I had real potential, but at the time, I felt like I needed to choose a more traditional path. I went back to school, stepped into corporate America, and eventually relocated to Dallas, Texas.

Even then, hair never left me. I kept coming back to it. One day, I decided to try making a wig for myself, and that moment changed everything. Through “YouTube University,” I began creating wigs by hand, practicing consistently, until one day I saw wig makers using a sewing machine. That was where it all really clicked for me.

My best friend saw my passion before I fully stepped into it and surprised me with a sewing machine for Christmas. That moment really pushed me to take my gift seriously. And this was during COVID, so having that sewing machine allowed me to make over 500 masks for people. Looking back, it truly felt like a predestined blessing.

As I continued to grow, I looked for ways to refine my craft and eventually stepped into a role as a ghost wig maker for a company in Dallas. That experience helped me master the fundamentals and really sharpen my skills. After that, I launched my business, Styles X Qui, and was met with so much support from family, friends, and my community. I was truly grateful.

As my business was growing, I found myself growing deeper in my faith as well. I remember praying and asking God to bring me closer to Him and to place me in rooms where He was present. I wanted to be surrounded by people who knew Him and to be in spaces where purpose aligned with passion. And He did exactly that.

Shortly after, one of the most defining moments in my journey came unexpectedly. After attending the Woman Evolve Conference, I received a last-minute call to step in and style Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts’s hair. I had very little time to prepare and walked into that moment with nothing but faith, skill, and the willingness to show up. Despite the pressure, I delivered, and that experience shifted everything for me.

New doors began to open. I started working with celebrity stylist Jason Bolin and was trusted with opportunities that once felt out of reach.

Today, I continue to grow and evolve through Styles X Qui. As I step into this next phase and rebrand, my focus is on creating high-quality, versatile wigs that give women the freedom to create their own look while still having a strong, reliable foundation.

My journey has been rooted in faith, consistency, and trusting the gift that God placed inside of me, even when the path wasn’t clear. I am building a brand that blends craftsmanship, faith, and experience.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t expect the journey to be completely smooth at all. One of my biggest challenges has been visibility when it comes to social media. I naturally love to live in the moment, and sometimes that creates an imbalance when you’re building a brand that also needs to be shared and seen.

I’m a naturally private person, so showing up consistently online hasn’t always come easy for me. But as I continue to grow, I remind myself that fear cannot win. I am actively working on becoming more comfortable with being seen and allowing my work and my journey to speak for itself.

This challenge has pushed me to grow in ways I didn’t expect, helping me step outside of my comfort zone and showing up more confidently, not just for my brand, but for myself as well!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m the founder of Styles X Qui, a creative and full-time wig maker and stylist. I specialize in wig construction, reconstruction, maintenance, styling, coloring, and overall wig care. I truly do a little bit of everything when it comes to wigs. I also enjoy production and on-set work, and photoshoots.

I’ve learned that every finished look begins with a strong base, and I’ve become known for my craftsmanship, precision, and my ability to deliver under pressure while maintaining consistency, quality, and professionalism. A lot of my reputation has been built both behind the scenes as a ghost wig maker and through direct client work, where trust and execution are everything.

What I’m most proud of is my journey and growth in this industry, especially being able to step into high-level spaces and contribute at a professional level. One of my career highlights was working alongside Celebrity Stylist Jason Bolin during New York Fashion Week, where I constructed 22 wigs for his segment in the Fashion Bomb Daily runway show. With the help of an incredible team, it was such an impactful moment. Seeing my work come to life in that space was a full-circle reminder of how far I’ve come.

What sets me apart is the personal engagement I bring to every client. I value real connection, authenticity, and being straightforward while still delivering high-quality, professional work. I combine craftsmanship, faith, and real industry experience to create not just a product, but a reliable and intentional service people can truly trust.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success, to me, is seeing your visions, goals, and dreams begin to come to pass. Taking the first step, like writing an idea down or forming an LLC without having every detail figured out yet, is success. It represents action, belief in yourself, and the courage to begin. To me, that first movement toward a dream already means you’ve succeeded in starting.

Success isn’t only about financial outcomes. It’s about turning thoughts into action and allowing your ideas to exist outside of your mind. Whether it becomes a “gold mine” or not, the fact that you believed in it and acted on it is success to me.
