Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Sams.
Hi Hannah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The first birdhouses were made as gifts from my mom and my grandmother. I had the idea to turn homes that meant a lot to them into tiny replicas for birds. Matt, my boyfriend at the time was handy so together we brought the idea to life.
Eventually we put the photos on Etsy and started to get some interest. Our first ever order was of a theatre in California and we decided to do a road trip there and deliver it.
After the first few orders Matt made us a website. Our first big Christmas rush was in 2022. Then in 2023 right before our wedding we decided that I should also quit my job. That’s when we both started building and painting the birdhouses full time. The business and our birdhouses has evolved so much since then!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The first few birdhouses were not weather proof. Which is important 🙂
We had the idea and then through trial and error have learned a lot about making them durable. Of course anything that is outside doesn’t last forever but we are really happy with all the methods we have to help them last.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We turn any home or building into a birdhouse. We are really proud of how realistic our birdhouses are. The birdhouses now have brick/ lap siding or any texture of the walls laser cut onto the wood to mimic the home.
The part we are most proud of is that many people across the US have used these as milestone gifts. It’s crazy to think that we get to play a role!
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
With there being so many people in DFW it’s amazing that you can enjoy nearly any type of cuisine and find really any type of service. We build our birdhouses at the Dallas Makerspace and it’s provided us so many tools we otherwise wouldn’t be able to invest in for ourselves.
The downside to all the people is all the traffic and highway construction!
Pricing:
- Our most affordable option is a front only replica. Which tend to range between $500 and $950. It all depends on how complex the home and the roof is.
- The stand price for our full replica is about $1,500 but of course it just depends on the home. The typical range is $900 to $2,500
- Some of our larger projects can be any where between 3K and 10k. This includes very elaborate buildings. Whenever we make a purple Martin house they tend to fall in this category. A purple Martin house has anywhere between 6-10 rooms. People love these birds because they eat mosquitoes and will come back to the same house every year.
