Life & Work with McKenzie of Dallas-Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to McKenzie.

Hi McKenzie , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A tale as old as time, I grew up on a stool, next to my mother and grandmothers. When I was 10 or 11, I had a “cake boss” party. We took some pictures and my mom made signs and invitations made, but little did I know that very picture would become my logo 4 years later. In 2016, we started Kenzie Kakes & co. And I’ve been making sweets, developing recipes, caking, and finding my strides ever since. But my culinary spark do come until my junior year of high school. I was lucky enough to get in the cte program and that was my introduction to the culinary world. After high school, I got in every kitchen I could. And I don’t plan on stopping any time soon

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! Being an entrepreneur is no easy feat but it does teach you and that’s what i appreciate about it. From time management to money management, orders to organization, It can be like roller coaster ride. But you learn the turns and grooves and you adjust. I believe the smoothness of my journey comes from my creativity and the joy I get from what I do. And if I enjoy what I do I get to put out something that exudes that. I’ve been able to play. I really enjoy experimenting and trying almost anything whether it’s be creating a recipe or trying a new cake decorating style. I feel that for every bump in the road I get, I learn how to handle it as they come.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Chef. sometimes pastry, sometimes savory. I don’t ever wanna limit myself. I’ve done work in culinary production, catering, cake services, hospitality service, etc.

Most known for my cakes, but these days I’m trying to bridge that gap with food and desert.

What sets me apart is my energy. I’m aware that I’m young, but I think with some shaping and time, I’m going to be unstoppable in whatever I do.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Keep going. While you’re up, while you’re down, when you don’t feel like it, when you don’t want to, you keep going. Keep being curious. Keep evolving, never stop growing. Never EVER stop learning. There is always something to learn. That goes for self, career, life, everything. And love. Love what you do. Take care of your gift and your gift will take care of you
