Life & Work with Meg Hudson of Dallas-Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Hudson.

Hi Meg, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Drive Thru Society began out of a deep love for rock/metal. I always gravitated towards music with heavier themes that talked about difficult topics and rock just resonated with me so much. Since high school, I always wanted to be in a band and write music that really spoke to people, so once I met Greg, I practically told him we were going to be in a band together. We went through many iterations and line ups, as many bands do when they are fumbling through the early years trying to figure out what they are doing, but our current line up is so solid and we are so grateful to have the team we have now. After a hiatus from 2017-2020, we got back together and added members Michael and Kathy Crabtree-Moore and they really elevated our sound. We started working with producer Cory Brunnemann and videographer, Jake Jones of Exceleration Media, and really feel our sound and visual have taken on new life. We’re so excited about the art we’re making now and can’t wait to see what’s next!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not! Haha I mentioned a hiatus and what it really felt like was the rug being ripped out from underneath us. In early 2017 we had actually decided to try and pursue another project with other people we knew in the music industry who were driven and highly motivated. We started working together, recorded an entire record, rebranded, and were working on showcasing to labels. However, after 4 months of grinding the atmosphere shifted and it felt like everyone turned on us (Meg specifically). The group was pushing me to lose weight and was monitoring my progress, they wanted me to sell sex which I had already stated before joining the group that I would not be comfortable with that, and overall beat me down to make me feel like I wasn’t doing enough or putting in enough effort. It was a really awful time and after 3 weeks of trying to meet these unrealistic expectations while maintaining my integrity, I bowed out. I told Greg (my husband and guitar player) that if this is what it takes then I don’t want it. After that we were left with nothing, we lost the entire record that we wrote/recorded (minus 2 songs) and were left wondering if music was going to be in our future at all after that. By the grace of God, He has redeemed so much and I’m so grateful for every opportunity that we get to share our music.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are categorized as Christian Violin Metalcore and we specialize in writing super catchy riffs and awesome melodies/lyrics. It’s neat to work with such amazing musicians because the creativity is truly unmatched, yet everyone has high expectations of each other and having that allows us all to rise to that level. We just released our first full length album ‘Thresholds’ and I would definitely say it’s something we are so proud of. It’s the culmination of 3 years of work and creativity finally coming to fruition and we spent so much time on every song to make sure it was exactly how we all wanted it. The main thing that sets us apart from other metalcore bands is we have a violin player! Kathy brings such a unique dynamic to our sound and our live show that you really can’t find anywhere else. So many bands treat strings like it’s sprinkles on top of the cupcake, but we actually treat it like a primary part of the band. Sometimes she has violin solos in the music just like a guitarist would, but it adds such a different element that really sets us apart.

What makes you happy?
Being in the music industry is one of the hardest things, but it brings me to life! Playing shows and getting to meet people is a huge inspiration for me, especially because I’m an extrovert and a people person. I have found so much joy in writing music and working with my bandmates/friends to make something really cool come to life. I think also hearing people’s responses to the music and how it’s effected them really makes me feel like what I’m doing is making a difference. My greatest joy is that someone finds the hope of Christ in our music despite maybe being in a really dark place.
